JIMMY REID continues to wave the magic wand at Pickering Town, who are on the cusp of mid-table in the Northern Counties East League premier division after a 2-1 win over Barton Town Old Boys at the Recreation Ground.
The Pikes boss has guided his side to 14 points in his seven league games in charge and, having taken over with the club staring relegation in the face, they are now in 14th place and just two points behind Liversedge with two games in hand.
Tom Adams and Joel Ramm got the goals, and Reid was delighted with the win following a two-week lay-off for the weather.
“I always thought we would not be beaten in the game,” he said. “It wasn’t a brilliant game following the lay-off and the lack of training for the players.”
Reid urged his players to attend training sessions arguing that they were vital to both them and the club but said, overall, that he was pleased with the victory.
Pickering were ahead after just three minutes. Tom Fenwick cut in from the left wing and was upended by Barton ’keeper David Bramley, and skipper Adams scored from the resulting penalty kick.
The visitors were level after 13 minutes when former Kirkbymoorside player Ryan Cooper followed up Dan Buttle’s effort. Barton began to get on top in midfield and a foul committed by Fenwick after 22 minutes allowed Ashley Lattimore a chance but his effort went over the bar.
Bramley was forced into evasive action on 35 minutes when Tom Reid raced clear down the right and passed to Ged Dalton, whose excellent cross needed the Barton ’keeper’s full attention. But Adam Mitchell at the other end was forced into a good save himself before the Pikes regained the lead two minutes before the break.
Fenwick again dazzled with his left wing run and crossed for Ramm to score with a header.
Steve Baxter had a good chance for the Pikes after 51 minutes, which went just over the crossbar and Barton’s Declan Marshall had a 25-yard right foot shot go over the crossbar after 72 minutes.
Five minutes from time, Mitchell saved superbly to keep his side in the lead with a point blank save to prevent Buttle scoring.
Pickering: Mitchell, Reid, Hodgson, Sturdy, Hartas, Fenwick, Ramm (Turnbull 47), Dalton, Baxter (Salt 64), Brown Birbeck 82), Adams. Subs not used: Clough, Wilstrop.
Next up for the Pikes are seventh-placed Parkgate on Saturday (3pm).
