Hockey: Old Malton in 5-1 victory over Lincoln Roses

A SUPERB first-half display helped Old Malton to a 5-1 victory over Lincoln Roses II in Yorkshire League division two.

The promotion-chasing Ryedale side remain third in the table, a point behind second-placed Slazengers I with two games in hand.

Old Malton led 4-0 at half-time and then soaked up Lincoln pressure after the break to wrap up the points.

’Keeper Tom Bumby was in outstanding form for Malton, pulling off a string of tremendous saves.

On 20 minutes the home side took the lead when Mark Taylor Ollson was first to react to a rebound.

Tom Brough then let fly with a strike from just inside the ‘D’ to make it 2-0, with Rikki Lawrence scoring from a short corner.

Clayton Hill then marked his Old Malton debut with a fourth goal before the break.

Roses pulled a goal back from a quickly-taken free hit early in the second half. But Brough’s second goal restored the four-goal advantage and man-of-the-match Bumby continued to thwart Lincoln at the other end.

Free-scoring Pickering Ladies I are now the top scorers in Yorkshire League division six after a 19-0 thrashing of hosts Hull University III.

Fourth-placed Pickering boosted their goal difference thanks to an early hat-trick from Lisa Hornby and goals from Kat Hardwick and Emily Hose as they led 5-0 at half-time.

Hull’s defence collapsed in the second half and Jo Davies capitalised to score nine goals.

Emma Hoyle scored a brace from short corner strikes, Hardwick scored her second and Lucy Jennings also netted, but Pickering officials “lost track” of who got the 19th goal.

The player of the match was Sophie Shepherdson.

Division seven Yorkshire leaders Pickering II were 3-1 winners at home to University of Leeds VI.
