Angling: Tester at Brooklands Lake

The Contemptibles found Brooklands Lake a tough nut to crack on Monday, with the nine competitors managing to locate only five fish between them.

John Collier made his only bite of the day count, banking a carp of 7lb 8oz from peg seven for a comfortable win.

Second place fell to Tony Mellor at peg two with a ghost carp of 2lb 2oz, leaving Fred Mewse in third with 1lb 1oz.

Skimmers were the main quarry on the Horseshoe at Raker Lakes on Tuesday, with Phil Roberts bagging 19lb 3oz of them to win G B Angling Club’s match. Drawn at peg 12 and utilising the pole with pellet, he netted fish to the 1lb mark.

Mick Mathews sat at peg 18 and added a bonus 3lb chub to his skimmers to finish second with 18lb 14oz.

Roberts made a successful return to the Horseshoe Lake the following day, taking the honours in the York midweek match with 11lb 8oz.

This time fish were much harder to locate and Roberts needed a 5lb-plus carp to help propel him into double figures at peg 21, ending the day with 11lb 8oz.

Second-placed Jim Pearson also relied heavily on a single carp, weighing in with 7lb 5oz.

Westland’s AC held their Friday match at Forest Lane Fishery, Alne, and struggled for bites.

Jimmy Creaser top-scored with 9lb 4oz, taking a single carp of 7lb, plus a barbel on feeder tactics at peg 54.

Colin McNeil sat next to the winner at peg 53 and was second with 8lb 6oz.

The Contemptibles found plenty of small silver fish prepared to feed on the Carp Lake at Wykeham Fishery last Friday, but it was a brace of carp that propelled Brian Hewitt into top spot at peg five with 12lb 15oz.

Tony Mellor secured second place with a net of roach, perch and skimmers weighing 11lb 11oz from peg 11.
