Northern Counties East League premier division round-up

WITH at least two games in hand over all the five clubs above them in the Northern Counties East League premier division, Selby Town spurned a chance to edge closer.

The Robins had to settle for a share of the plunder in a 1-1 draw at home to Maltby Main.

Midway through the first half Scott Pickles fired Selby in front, but despite creating several openings they were pegged back thanks to a Rob Branagan reply just past the hour.

It was a similar tale of home anguish for Pickering Town, who drew first blood against Nostell Miners Welfare with an astute back-heel from Darren Clough just seven minutes before the interval.

But right on the cusp of half-time parity was restored with an equaliser from Graham Marchant.

Scarborough Athletic too opened the scoring at Hallam through Scott Phillips after just ten minutes, but they perished 4-1, the hosts’ victory reinforced by a brace of goals in the last six minutes.

There was no such problem for Tadcaster Albion, who strengthened their fifth place in the NCEL first division after a 2-0 triumph at Yorkshire Amateur thanks to a brace of goals from Steve Davey.

A blistering spell either side of half-time powered Harrogate Railway Athletic to a superb conquest in the UniBond League division North one.

At home to Woodley Sports, The Rail took the lead in the 40th minute through Aaron Hollingrake.

Four minutes into the second half and a Ben Jones penalty doubled the advantage before Liam Gray made it three just three minutes later.

While Woodley pulled back a goal, the Station View outfit’s supremacy was never truly threatened and a valuable three points were secured.

But Harrogate Town’s woes continued at the foot of the Blue Square North.

Eight minutes into the second half the game was all but over with hosts Alfreton Town 3-0 to the good.

The lone consolation for Town was a 61st-minute reply from substitute Adam Nowakowski.
