Pickering II's still looking for a win in Hunters York & District Senior League division three

PICKERING II are still seeking their first win in Hunters York & District Senior League division three – but they at least managed to hold on for points against runaway leaders Bolton Percy.

The champions elect took the bold step of declaring after 41 overs after reaching 211-4 against 11th-placed Pikes, and the decision almost paid dividends when the hosts lost nine wickets in their extended innings of 49 overs before finally holding out for a draw at 194-9.

Joe White was Percy’s leading scorer with 68, while brothers Jamie Rigby (55) and Ali Rigby (35) helped their side stockpile runs. Pickering’s spirited response was led by Kev Wilson (67) and Carl Suggitt (31), but Bolton kept their noses in front thanks to Karl Martin’s 3-40.

Alistair Thorp hit 105, which enabled Hovingham to just have the better of a draw with Easingwold II.

Thorp was supported by Richie Brown (56), Will Prest (33) and Tom Collard (25) as the home side moved to 173-6.

For Easingwold, Rich Wentworth took 3-49 then saw team-mates Keith Hollinrake (36) and Ian Dobson (28) help their side to 168-8, within one hit of victory.

James Leckonby was the hero for Duncombe Park as they beat York by 44 runs. P Kent made 67 in Park’s 187 before Leckonby took 5-18 as York were skittled for 143.

Fifteen-year-old Tom Fussell took 4-38 as Malton & Old Malton II got their first win in division 4A against Heworth II.

Lee Bradshaw hit 65 of Heworth’s 156 all out when they batted first, with Fussell supported by Tom Audsley (4-21).

Rich Winterburn 4-47 helped reduce the hosts’ reply to 93-7 before a fine stand between James Spencer (64no) and Tony Linsley (34no) took their side to a three-wicket win as Malton completed an on-the-day double over Heworth.

The division 4B derby between the top two sides saw homesters Sheriff Hutton beat Sheriff Hutton Bridge by five wickets with just four balls to spare in a high-scoring game.

Home bowler Andy Kenny, having transferred from the opposition a week ago, removed the Bridge skipper for a duck on his way to 3-48, but Steve Clipston (76) and Vic Klays (35) added 103 for the second wicket. Geoff Schofield made 44, but kamikaze running saw five batsmen run-out before they were all gone for 201 in the final over.

In reply, top-order runs came from Rich Ainsley (54) and Joel Wilford (29). Nick Schofield’s 12-over stint saw him take 3-42, but an unbeaten 48 from Andrew Frank steered the Castlemen to victory and top spot.

Huby’s promotion challenge was dented when they lost at Stamford Bridge II, whose 35-run win moved them into safe mid-table waters.

Stamford’s principal players were batsman Kev Smith, who made 72 in a total of 168-9, and Neil Porteous, whose 6-37 had Huby all out for 133.

Sheriff Hutton II made a piece of history in the York Senior League – but it was all in defeat.

Sally Harrison became the first woman to captain a York Senior League side when she took charge of the second team in their division 5B match at New Earswick.

Both her openers were out before a run was scored, and with Richard Wilstrop taking 4-11 off seven overs they slipped to 31-8.

Chris Megone (27no) found a partner in Harrison, but they were all gone for 61 and Earswick opener Luke Whittaker (38no) guided his side home for the loss of four wickets.

Charlie Foster made an authorized appearance in Hovingham’s second XI in a bottom-of-the-table game at Bolton Percy and regained his form by hitting an unbeaten 126.

Tom Gils took 4-41 but Foster saw his side to 213-7 and Joe Skelton then took 4-29 to send Bolton to defeat at 120 all out and earn Hovingham a second win of the season.
