RYEDALE Beckett League first division leaders Harome were given a mighty scare by Hovingham before maintaining their place at the top with an eight-run win.
Chasing a Harome score of 133, Hovingham were well set at 92-0 thanks to sterling efforts by Stuart Prest (55) and Rich Bowling (49), but the innings tailed off and they ended agonisingly short of their target at 125-9 when the overs expired. In a week which was hit by postponements due to bad weather, mid-table Pickering beat Great Habton by 20 runs to avenge an opening-day away defeat.
Pickering started well with Craig Aconley (37) and Shaun Smith (38) putting on 61 for the first wicket, and Simon King (13) and Mark Shepherd (18no) kept the scoreboard ticking along.
Wayne Dawson (3-21) bowled well for Habton as the Pikes made 125-6.
After a slow start, Habton’s Chris Smith (48) started to take control in the middle of the innings but his side started to lose wickets and lost momentum. Craig Aconley and Johnny Ibbotson bowled well at the death for Pikes as the visitors closed on 105-7.
Kirkbymoorside confidently beat Westow by eight wickets Neil Earle (36) was the mainstay of the Westow innings of 92, while the Moorsiders were well served by Fairweather (4-30) and saw Andy Marley (40no) and Jodie Robson (38) take them to victory at 93-2. Bottom-of-the-table Heslerton suffered a double whammy as they lost in the last over to Duncombe Park.
The teams had agreed that the match should also act as their cup tie, which had previously been called off.
Heslerton made 135-7 but were pipped as Park reached 137-3.
Settrington increased their lead in division two when winning their top-of-the-table clash against Swinton & Broughton by 26 runs.
Andy Taylor’s 54, on a track better suited to the bowlers, was the mainstay of their total of 112-6 as a young Swinton side fielded enthusiastically. A Hill bowled a tidy spell of leg spin (taking 2-34) and Joel Preston returned 2-8.
Stephen Beal and Eddy Roun-thwaite’s tight opening spell put the visitors well behind the clock, despite Ryan Jacobs’ 38. Andy Taylor rounded off a fine all round display with 2-16.
Nawton Grange beat Ryedale by 35 runs – batting first on a slow pitch and overcoming the loss of two early wickets. They found their rhythm when Arran Rivis and Justin Palmer came together and scored 85 and 31 respectively in a Nawton total of 139-5.
Alex Ibbotson’s 2-29 and Ryan Boyes (3-30) showed once again that they are bowlers to look out for.
Coote soon got among the Ryedale batsmen taking 3-24 and despite Ian Smith’s 52, D Dunn (4-38) and P Wilson (2-21) ended any hope of a Ryedale win.
Burythorpe racked up an imposing 150-1 against Whitwell with Matty Beckett scoring an unbeaten 81 full of fine shots all around the wicket.
That total was always going to be tough for Whitwell’s batsmen and Burythorpe’s opening bowlers, Ollie Pimlott and Eamonn Wall, made life hard. Pimlott finished with 3-19 and Wall 1-22.
Some big hitting down the order against the spinners briefly threatened Burythorpe, but some good catching, particularly by Chris Bingham in the deep, made sure that Burythorpe won with some ease by 23 runs. C Goodwill top scored with 41.
Batting first, Slingsby were making good progress against Lockton at 63-2 after six overs. But they folded to 107 all out and Lockton did not hang about in the run chase – despite losing two wickets in the first two overs.
Rich Boyes’ 55 not out and Guy Nattrass (37 no) powered them to a win in the tenth over.
Burythorpe also fell by 18 runs to Ryedale SC in the first bout of matches – the only game which managed to beat the weather that night.
On a pitch which played well despite a deluge of rain, Ryedale batted first and started uncertainly, losing three quick wickets to some sharp bowling from Pimlott and Wall.
Sam Burns and Alex Ibbotson staged a fine fightback, scoring freely as Burythorpe’s bowling and fielding struggled to contain them. Burns top scored with 81 to counter Wall’s 3-39.
The total of 149-5 always looked a challenge but Burythorpe’s reply started superbly, with Beckett and Pimlott adding 88 for the first wicket, well ahead of the run rate.
Two disastrous run-outs changed the game, though, and with wickets tumbling, the game swiftly fell away from Burythorpe. Ryan Boyes picked up 3-7 from two overs at the end.
