Rosedale clinch cup

RJF Homes-Beckett League

The last of this season's cup finals was played at Kirkbymoorside last Tuesday. The Marisa Sports Cup Final saw Rosedale win the trophy for the first time since the 1988-89 season.

Rosedale beat Old Malton 3rds 4-1 in an end-to-end game. Old Malton 3rds took a nine minute lead when Jimmy Tonkinson scored a fine goal following a good right wing move.

Rosedale equalised after 21 minutes when Martin Myers burst through the Old Malton defence and scored with a 20-yard right foot shot.

In the second half, Rosedale looked the fitter and more determined side. They took the lead after 59 minutes when Jonathan Seller scored with a close range header following an excellent Matty Gardner cross. Four minutes later Matty Gardner scored his sides third goal.

Old Malton's keeper Stuart Corner made a brilliant save after 74 minutes to prevent a second Gardner goal after fine work by Seller.

Rosedale's fourth and final goal was scored after 82 minutes and what a goal it was. Jonathan Seller ran from well in his own half of the field, beating four players en-route before he unleashed an unstoppable 15-yard left foot angled shot which went under keeper Corner and into the Old Malton goal.

Three minutes from time and Rosedale's Martin Foxton crossed from the right but substitute Richard Wilkinson missed a wonder opportunity to get on the score sheet.

In stoppage time Old Malton were awarded a penalty which was taken by Richard Stevenson and superbly saved by the Rosedale keeper Simon Day.

The trophy and individual awards were presented by Darren Rivis, the manager of Kirkbymoorside FC first team.

Man of the match winners were Josh Freer for Old Malton and Stewart Dowson for Rosedale.

Now that the league and all the cup finals have finished, the league is busy getting ready for the forthcoming 2008-09 season.
