Hunters York and District Senior League: Premier Division
Malton and Old Malton were beaten by 10 wickets when they were visited by premier division rivals Easingwold.
Malton were dismissed for 103 with only South African Jonathon Davies, who made 57 on his debut, making an appreciable contribution as Paul Skilbeck claimed 3 for 20 and Stephen Piercy 3 for 28. Piercy was then joined by cousin Martin who made 54no in a winning opening stand of 107.
Pickering were also defeated at home, by Woodhouse Grange, who left it very late to clinch their three wicket success as only two balls remained. Pikes' Mark Shepherd hit an unbeaten 102 as he and Chris Nicholls 27 saw the Pikes to 210-9. Grange's run chase was mounted by Nick Hadfield 72, Joel Hughes 51 and Mike Burdett 31. Craig Aconley claimed 4-52 but could not prevent Woodhouse retaining their 100 per cent record.
Divisional newcomers Goole are in second place, a mere five points behind Grange after another good all-round performance by Ashley Hulme helped them defeat Stamford Bridge by five wickets. The Australian took 3-34 and Richard Mann 3-32 as Stamford were pegged to 163-9 with Andy Milner 33 and Phil Hill 32 being the top batsmen. Hulme then followed with 47 whilst Neil Foster was on 36no when Goole reached a winning 164-5.
Division One
There was a real thriller at Folkton & Flixton's Filey Road ground where York maintained their 100 per cent record when winning by just six runs. York's innings of 174 all out benifitted from good knocks from Ian Jarvis with 40, teenager Matthew Wilks with 35 and Andy Kay who made 31. Ben Elvidge had the best bowling figures for the hosts with 3-14 whilst West Indian Tennyson Roacj claimed 3-25. The Carribean man then made 57 whilst Damon Gormley chipped in with 45 but the honours were wrestled away from the home side by K Ahmed whose 5 for 25 had Flixton all out for 168 leaving York celebrating their third win by just six runs.
Sheriff Hutton Bridge, who had a hard time last year in the Premier Division before being relegated at the last hurdle, are finding life in division one equally testing. They batted first when entertaing old rivals Heworth and, after a slowish start, looked likely to post a challenging total as Mik Smith 44, Dave Gilbertson 53 and Craig Hunter 39 made valuable runs. Spinner Mark Bell back in his old club colours after a spell at York, slowed the run rate and the Bridge batsmen failed to capitalise in the final few overs, missing out on a fifth batting point when their innings closed on 199-8 with Bell returning 5 for 70. In reply, Heworth prospered through Richard Woodmansey with 68 and Shannon Bowen, who made 44. Mike Smith sent down 23 overs to claim 3 for 69 but an unbeaten 27 from Guy Wilkinson saw Heworth to a six wicket triumph in the 46th over.
Division Two
After losing their first two games, Duncombe Park had an easy victory when they travelled to St Helen's Road where they beat Dringhouses by six wickets. Danny Snaith made 42 and Rob Thrall 24 for the York-based side but visiting skipper Colin Humpleby took 4-41 to sever the home innings on 146. Richard Cole, 3 for 45, then struck back as Park lost 4 wickets for 65 but Brian Leckenby put two low scores behind him to anchor the innings with 64no whilst Peter Kent destroyed the home attack as he raced to an unbeaten 53 off just 34 balls.
Division Three
Londesbrough Park are divisional leaders following their six-wicket win at Sheriff Hutton, whose third successive defeat leaves them at the foot of the division. Sheriff's batsmen were troubled by the experienced Dick Sawyer who logged figures of 5 for 57 but were able to reach 169-8 thanks to the batting of Ben Tompkins 41 and Nick Oswald 39. Park were then steered to victory by Ben Lewis with 34 and Mark Tissiman who was unbeaten with 40.
The league president was impressed with Hovingham's new pavilion and visiting batsman Geoff Schofield was probably equally complimentary of the track as he made 101 in a high scoring game. The home side reached a seemingly insurmountable total as a quartet of batsmen helped themselves to a run banquet. John Mosey hit 60, Alistair Thorp 48 and Tichie Brown 33 before Paul Deverell, with 63, took Hovingham's total up to an impressive 255-5. Sheriff Hutton Bridge's batsmen then also found the pitch to their liking with Schofield leading the way. Andy Kenny hit an unbeaten 43 but home bowler Steve Mosey (3-65) did just enough to ensure his side gained an advantage draw as The Bridge totalled 241-6.
Stillington youngster Shaun Speck cracked 74 as his side made a first innings score of 185-7 against visiting Thorp Arch & Boston Spa. Phil Moss added 30 to counteract the 3-50 gained by Ben Preston. Moss then took 4-15 in a decisive 7 over spell whilst Mike Whitwell gave good value with 3-31. Their efforts nullified the 40 made by Andy Hawkswell who saw his side slip to defeat at 125 all out.
Division Four
One of the lowest totals for some years saw Hovingham all out for just 19 at Pocklington whose James Saltmer, with 3 wickets for 3 runs and Rich Williman, whose 4 wickets cost a mere 2 runs, set up a rapis 9 wicket win for the hosts.
Having nominally retired as a player, Kevin Borwell donned his whites again for Stillington and proved to be a match winner at Bolton Percy where he took 3 for 31 and then cracked 63 to see his side home by 4 wickets.
Hovingham batsman George Mosey leaves the crease as Sheriff Hutton Bridge II wicketkeeper Mark Prosser and bowler Joe Richardson celebrate his wicket after being caught behind.
Pickering v Woodhouse Grange. A close call for Pickering batsman Mark Shepherd.
Pickering v Woodhouse Grange. Pickering's opener Chris Nichols is out from a ball from Grange's Joe Hughes.
