YORKSHIRE slipped to a seven-wicket defeat against Surrey at Scarborough as the Division One leaders completed their pursuit of 228 in the early stages of the afternoon.

Starting the day on 89-0, Rory Burns top-scored with 97 and Scott Borthwick added 62.

Surrey have now won five of their seven Specsavers County Championship matches this season, while Yorkshire have lost three of theirs.

The White Rose started the day well, but they needed more than one wicket in the opening hour.

That was Mark Stoneman lbw to Ben Coad without adding to his overnight 32 as Surrey fell to 99-1.

Burns then added 47 for the second wicket with Borthwick before uppercutting Tim Bresnan to deep backward point.

The Surrey captain, who hit 15 fours in 146 balls, fell three short of a third Championship century of 2018, but he is the leading run-scorer in Division One with 722 at 65.63.

Surrey reached lunch at 189-2, needing 39 more.

Borthwick reached his fifty off 87 balls in the second over of the afternoon before being bowled by Jack Leaning with eight runs needed.

He shared 74 with third-wicket partner Ryan Patel (24 not out).

Yorkshire, having gained six points from this fixture to Surrey’s 21, now break for the opening stages of the Vitality Blast.

If, as expected, Lancashire draw with Hampshire at Emirates Old Trafford later today, they will be second from bottom in the table, four points behind Hampshire and three behind the Red Rose, although with a game in hand on both.

Yorkshire’s next Championship match is away at Lancashire, starting on Sunday, July 22.
