TOM Kohler-Cadmore’s first appearance of the season yielded a sparkling 164 as Yorkshire got their Royal London one-day Cup campaign off to a winning start against Durham at Emirates Riverside.

The 23-year-old opener hit 15 fours and seven sixes in 151 balls to underpin the Vikings 328-4 on his List A debut for the county.

It was a target which Durham, captained by New Zealand’s Tom Latham and including veteran Paul Collingwood, never looked like chasing.

Playing his first match of the summer like Kohler-Cadmore, limited overs specialist Adil Rashid was superb with the ball as the hosts slipped badly in reply to 186 all out.

Rashid finished with 4-47 from 10 overs in a 142-run win.

Kohler-Cadmore was not selected for the first five Championship games, forcing him to prepare for this competition with second-team cricket and with outings for Cleckheaton in the Bradford Premier League.

Steve Patterson elected to bat in his first game as captain, and Kohler-Cadmore started quickly in posting the county’s fourth highest individual List A score.

He shared 80 inside 13 overs for the first wicket with Adam Lyth (30) and 176 in 29 for the second with India’s Che Pujara, who finished with a measured 82.

Kohler-Cadmore and Pujara were actually becalmed by some improved Durham bowling through the middle of the innings, with Collingwood’s medium pacers going for 40 from his 10 overs.

But the acceleration came from the end of the 34th over, where the Vikings reached at 169-1.

The next seven overs brought 86 runs, including a flurry of sixes for Kohler-Cadmore before he fell trying to hit left-arm spinner George Harding for an eighth six and was caught at long-on as the score fell to 256-2 in the 42nd.

Pujara was happy to drop anchor. A player with an impressive one-day record but without the dynamism others possess, he only hit one boundary in his first 50 runs before expanding later on.

Durham lost three key wickets inside 13 overs of their chase to all but end their chances of victory.

Opener Graham Clark was smartly caught behind by Andrew Hodd off Ben Coad at the end of the third before Tim Bresnan bowled Clark’s surprise opening partner Collingwood off tis pads in the sixth.

And when Latham picked out Harry Brook at point in Patterson’s second over, Durham were 53-3 and in a deep hole.

Will Smith followed with the score on 90 as he was run out following a mid-pitch mix-up with Michael Richardson.

That wicket came in Rashid’s first over, and he struck in his second, third and fourth as Ryan Pringle chopped on, Richardson was lbw sweeping for an innings high 43 and James Weighell was bowled around his legs as the score slipped to 113-7 in the 26th.

Matty Potts, who earlier took three wickets, and Stuart Poynter (36) then held Yorkshire up before Bresnan forced the latter to chop on at 160-8.

Bresnan finished with 2-39 from 10. Rashid’s fourth came with the last ball of his spell when Potts (30) was bowled sweeping before Rimmington top-edged Patterson behind to wrap up victory in the 40th over.

Yorkshire’s North Group campaign continues against Warwickshire at Emerald Headingley on Sunday, starting at 11am.
