MATTHEW Fisher celebrated his first County Championship appearance of the season with a superb five-wicket haul against Warwickshire to boost Yorkshire’s bid to avoid relegation.

The Sheriff Hutton Bridge seamer, 19, returned standout figures of 5-54 from 15.1 overs as the Bears were bowled out for 219 after tea, including 100 for New Zealand off-spinner Jeetan Patel.

Things could have been better for Yorkshire having reduced already relegated Warwickshire to 49-6 before lunch.

But they are still a long way ahead of the game having closed on 62-1 from 23 overs in reply. West Indies debutant Kraigg Brathwaite was caught at slip for 18 late in the day.

Elsewhere, fifth-placed Yorkshire’s relegation rivals Somerset and Middlesex both enjoyed differing days.

Before this penultimate round, there was just one point separating the three teams in the Specsavers Division One table.

Somerset were bowled out for 269 by Surrey at the Oval. Surrey replied with 42-0.

Second-bottom Middlesex in seventh made 233 against Lancashire at Lord’s, with the Red Rose reply at 113-5.

Fisher said: "It's a good feeling, and something I've waited probably two years for now with my injuries last year.

“It's been a very good day. We bowled really well.”

The White Rose’s all seam attack impressed hugely before lunch following Warwickshire’s decision to bat first upon winning the toss.

They bowled excellent lines and made use of the help on offer through the air and off the pitch. Help was not elaborate, but just enough to cause Jonathan Trott’s men problems.

Trott was one of the six morning wickets - brilliantly caught at second slip by Adam Lyth off Jack Brooks for one.

Brooks and new ball partner Ben Coad struck twice apiece, while Steve Patterson also added one.

Fisher claimed his first before lunch, getting debutant opener Liam Banks caught behind for 13 as the score fell to 29-3 in the 17th.

Yorkshire were frustrated by Patel, Ian Bell and Boyd Rankin from just before lunch to shortly after tea.

Patel and Bell, whose 51 was the visitors next best score, shared 96 for the seventh wicket in 21 overs.

Patel overtook Bell in the late twenties on the way to a 47-ball fifty.

Bell went beyond 19,000 first-class career runs in the morning before reaching only his fourth fifty of the campaign off 121.

Fisher removed both men having gone through a season of trying to break into Yorkshire’s first team.

He played sporadically in the two limited overs competitions, but has had to wait until now to play four-day cricket.

Part of the reason for his absence has been a desire to manage his workload following last year’s hamstring problems. He has come into the team in place of off-spinner Azeem Rafiq.

The teenager struck twice in the 50th over to get Bell and Chris Wright lbw as the score fell to 151-8 before Patel and Rankin (21 not out) shared 66 in 19 overs for the ninth wicket either side of tea.

Patel reached his century off 111 balls, but he was lbw next ball to hand Fisher his fourth wicket and leave the score at 217-9 in the 69th over.

Fisher’s next over secured his fifth wicket and wrapped up the innings, with Australian Ryan Sidebottom bowled.

Lyth pulled a couple of sixes in Yorkshire’s commanding reply before close, and he will begin day two on 35.
