YORKSHIRE made a positive start to their reply to Surrey's 592 during the second afternoon of their Specsavers County Championship match at The Oval.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore and departing overseas batsman Shaun Marsh shared the county's highest opening partnership of the season, reaching tea at 78-0 from 20 overs.

Both men played confidently in excellent batting conditions, Kohler-Cadmore reaching 39 and Marsh 35.

Surrey had earlier advanced from 543-7 at lunch, with Steve Patterson taking the last three wickets to fall.

He trapped Freddie van den Bergh and Stuart Meaker lbw with successive deliveries before getting Rikki Clarke caught at mid-wicket by a diving Tim Bresnan for 41.
