TRAINER Dean Ivory is optimistic Stewards’ Cup hero Lancelot Du Lac can put up another bold show in tomorrow's feature at York, the Betfred Supports York Against Cancer Garrowby Stakes.

The seven-year-old son of Shamardal lines up in the richest-ever running of this Listed prize - now worth £50,000 - on the back of an emphatic victory in Goodwood’s famous handicap run over the same distance of six furlongs.

Lancelot Du Lac was due to contest the Hopeful Stakes at Newmarket a fortnight ago but was a late withdrawal on account of the fast ground.

With the ground currently good to soft for The Press Family Raceday on Knavesmire, and with showers about, Ivory is confident his 11-time winner will have his ideal conditions.

He said: “We have been waiting to get ground with some ease in it and it should be ideal on Sunday.

“He has won at York before (over the same trip in September 2013) and seems in great form.

“Winning the Stewards’ Cup with him was a great thrill. We knew he had a good one in him but he had just been unlucky at times. I was delighted for the horse and everyone who had worked so hard. And he won it so well. I wasn’t confident he was going to win but Frankie (Dettori, jockey) was.

“They say it was just a handicap but the prestige of winning a race like the Stewards’ Cup was very special.”

A field of nine will face the starter including an intriguing runner from Ireland in Downforce. Trained by Willie McCreery, this Listed winner at Cork hasn’t been seen finishing fourth in the Group 2 Greenlands Stakes at The Curragh in May.

Former Ayr Gold Cup hero for Richard Fahey, Don’t Touch, Kevin Ryan’s Tommy Taylor and David O’Meara’s Intisaab all fly the flag for Yorkshire, with the latter having taken the Coral Sprint Trophy over course and distance last October.

The seven-race card gets underway at 1.55 with the Tom O’Ryan Memorial Handicap run in memory of the former York Press racing journalist.
