DERBYSHIRE breached fortress Headingley on a frustrating night for Yorkshire in the NatWest T20 Blast, including a concussion injury for Australian overseas batsman Shaun Marsh.

Marsh was hit on the head by a slower ball bouncer from New Zealand’s Matt Henry as Yorkshire posted 180-5, and he did not field.

He was helped from the field complaining of dizziness whilst practicing his catching mid-innings and will not play against Durham tonight or against Essex in the Championship at Scarborough on Sunday.

Billy Godleman hit 67 for the Falcons, who consigned Yorkshire to a first defeat in 11 Blast games at Headingley.

They gained 10 runs off the last over to win by five wickets with two balls to spare.

The Falcons top the group with 13 points from 10 matches, while the Vikings are fourth with 11 from 10.

“It looks like Shaun's going to be out for a week showing signs of concussion,” explained Yorkshire’s director of cricket Martyn Moxon.

“We'll just have to see how he pulls through over the next couple of days. He'll miss the Durham T20 and Essex at Scarborough.

“We'll not be taking any chances, and he'll be closely scrutinised over the next few days. He's feeling a bit better from when he came off.

"It was a slower ball bouncer that hit him more on the temple.

“When we went out to do the fielding practice at change of innings, he started to feel dizzy then. So we dragged him off very quickly.”

Sarfaraz Ahmed hit an entertaining 42 off 31 balls as Yorkshire got themselves up to a competitive total on a pitch which was slow in the first innings and, according to Moxon, quickened up in the second innings with a bit of rain around.

Godleman’s 67 was backed up by Wayne Madsen’s 47, with them sharing a third-wicket stand of 77 inside eight overs to advance the chase from 46-2.

Madsen fell to Steve Patterson in the 19th over, with the seamer taking three wickets as he and Adil Rashid tightened things up.

Derbyshire went from 123-2 in the 14th over as Godleman was caught behind by debutant Sarfaraz off David Willey to need 49 off five overs and 33 off three.

That became 10 off the last, but Alex Hughes hit the first ball from Tim Bresnan for six over long-on before captain Gary Wilson (33 not out) hit the winning runs.

Earlier, Yorkshire were helped along by a series of useful contributions, with Sarfaraz’s the best of them.

He shared 67 inside nine overs for the fourth wicket with Marsh, who hit 31 to add to Adam Lyth’s 34.

Part-time off-spinner Madsen was Derbyshire’s pick of the bowlers with 1-29 from four overs.

Liam Plunkett missed the match with a tweaked hamstring and will be assessed ahead of the Durham clash.

Moxon added: ”It skidded onto the bat a bit easier in the second innings, and the outfield became a bit quicker. It was flying across the outfield. We were a bit frustrated with that.

“There's not much we can do about the weather, and to be fair to Derby they are a strong unit in T20.

"They played well, and it was another close game against them. Unfortunately we've come out on the wrong end both times.”
