PICKERING Town were handed a lesson by Northern League champions Shildon in the FA Vase.

Shildon started brightly and almost scored after 25 seconds when a left wing cross by David Ferguson found an unmarked Amar Purewal whose header went straight into the arms of Pikes goalkeeper Toby Wells.

Two minutes later, Ryan Cooper sent a 25 yard right foot shot wide for the Pikes.

Shildon took a firm grip on the game from the ninth minute when Anthony Bell’s right wing corner saw Daniel Moore miss the Pikes goal.

Two minutes later Bell combined with Moore whose excellent 40 yard run was stopped by a timely Niall Tilsley tackle,.

A minute later a foul conceded by Pikes assistant manager Denny Ingram saw Lewis Wing’s 30 yard right foot free kick go wide.

Two minutes later, Ferguson’s left wing cross found Michael Rae whose 18 yard right foot shot produced an excellent save by Wells.

The best move of the first half by the Pikes arrived after 18 minutes - started by Ingram and Nathan Kamara. Ryan Blott’s neat back heel found Nick Thompson whose effort fizzed over the crossbar.

The opening goal of the game arrived after 20 minutes when Michael Rae, the former Hartlepool and Whitby Town striker, scored with a fantastic strike from 22 yards.

A minute later, Wells saved a good effort by Purewal and, five minutes later, James Harwood started a good move for the visitors but Moore’s 25 yard shot went over the crossbar.

Shildon’s firm grip on the game saw Rae score a second goal after 25 minutes with a brilliant header following a superb cross by Ferguson.

Daniel Moore scored just before halftime for Shildon with an unstoppable shot.

The Pikes introduced new signing Billy Logan at the interval who put in plenty of effort.

Shildon took a four goal lead after 49 minutes when Ferguson finished off a superb move involving Wing and Moore.

The Pikes had Lewis Taylor cautioned after 52 minutes for a shocking foul.

The best chance for the Pikes arrived in the 64th minute when a Taylor free kick found an unmarked Tilsley but his header was superbly saved by Liversedge.

Shildon scored a final goal in the 71st minute when a corner taken by Billy Greulich-Smith found an unmarked Purewal who finished from close range.
