MONDIALISTE was unable to shine in the Breeders' Cup Turf for York-based trainer David O'Meara.

The Irish horse, winner of the Arlington Million just three months ago, finished last of 12 in the £2.5m race on Saturday night.

O'Meara had been optimistic that the six year old would be suited by the trip at Santa Anita Park in California despite it being his first crack at a mile and four furlongs.

However, the horse, ridden by jockey Daniel Tudhope, weakened over two furlongs out and eventually finished five and quarter lengths behind the winner, Highland Reel, which was trained by Aidan O'Brien and ridden by Seamus Heffernan.

Flintshire finished second while another O'Brien runner, Found, finished third.

Found, winner of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, will now be retired for a breeding career.

Meanwhile, Arrogate surged past California Chrome in the closing stages to win the £4.8m Breeders Cup Classic.

Frankie Dettori rode Queen's Trust to victory for British trainer Sir Michael Stoute in the Filly & Mare Turf.
