ENGLAND seamer Mark Wood left Yorkshire's treble hopes in tatters with a hostile four-wicket burst as Durham prevailed in their NatWest T20 Blast semi-final at Edgbaston.

Wood twice picked up two wickets in an over as eventual beaten finalists Durham defended their competitive 156-6 total against a White Rose side packed with England stars past and present.

He bowled the quickest spell any of the Yorkshire batsmen will have faced this summer as they could only reach 149-9 to lose by seven runs.

Wood bowled Jonny Bairstow, Liam Plunkett and Tim Bresnan, while also having Gary Ballance superbly caught at short fine-leg.

But just as impressive was the way he scrambled the brain of Joe Root by forcing him into three plays and misses at the start of the fourth over, no doubt contributing to his dismissal to Chris Rushworth in the next when he miscued a pull.

Yorkshire managed to control Durham's innings, despite 54 for Ben Stokes, and they would have been confident of a final place against Northamptonshire at halfway – but things were not going their way.

David Willey was struck a nasty blow on the left hand while attempting to field a full-blooded drive from Mark Stoneman in the third over of the match.

He was able to complete his four-over spell but he later opened the batting with a suspected broken hand and was out cheaply.

The England limited-overs all-rounder has had a scan and will have a follow-up today to determine the extent of the damage, although he has been ruled out of the international series with Pakistan at least.

"Wood bowled beautifully, no doubt about that," said Yorkshire coach Jason Gillespie.

"Durham brought him back on to take a wicket because we were going along quite nicely. We probably didn't recover from that.

"We came here with the goal to be playing in the final. Unfortunately, we got beaten by a better team on the day.

"You have to respect the fact when the opposition, whether it be as an individual or as a team, outplays you and Woody's spell was fantastic.

"Any cricket fan can appreciate that. Any watcher can see that he was used very well by the captain.

"He was brought on to take wickets and put pressure back on us. That's exactly what happened."

Azeem Rafiq and Plunkett both struck twice for Yorkshire with the ball after Durham had won the toss.

And despite the early losses of Willey and Root, the Vikings were well placed in their chase thanks to Adam Lyth's 42-ball 64.

They were 86-3 after 12 overs but Wood bowled Bairstow with a yorker and then had Ballance superbly caught by Durham skipper Paul Collingwood, whose use of Wood was instrumental.

Wood later bowled the 19th over with 23 runs needed following the departure of Lyth, caught at backward point off Rushworth.

And the Durham star bowled Plunkett and then Bresnan to leave last pair Adil Rashid and Azeem Rafiq needing an unlikely 15 off the last.

Gillespie, whose side face Nottinghamshire in the County Championship at Scarborough tomorrow, said: "It was a fantastic game of cricket, no doubt.

"I thought we were pretty decent in the field. It was a bit wet but I thought the lads stuck to their task and I'm really proud of them for that.

"We finished off strongly with the ball. I thought Tim Bresnan bowled fantastically well at the end there but, yes, we're disappointed to lose."

Notts seamer Jake Ball is Willey's replacement in the England squad, ruling him out of playing at Scarborough.
