TRAVIS Head is targeting a fast start to his Yorkshire career as the Vikings bid to maintain their NatWest T20 Blast quarter-final push against Nottinghamshire tonight.

The powerful Australian batsman linked up with his new team-mates on Monday ahead of his Trent Bridge debut.

If Yorkshire can win their fourth successive North Group game, they will be in a strong position to qualify with three fixtures remaining.

“Momentum is a great thing in T20 cricket,” said the 22-year-old, who will line up alongside New Zealand captain Kane Williamson for one night only.

“The lads have won their last three games, and hopefully we can continue that against Notts.

“I want to win games of cricket for Yorkshire, that’s what I’m here to do.

“I feel in nice touch, and I’m feeling fresh and fit.

“I haven’t had the games I’d like on the tours that I’ve been on, but that’s allowed me to work hard on my game.”

Head has come to Yorkshire with a reputation as one of Twenty20 cricket’s brightest batting talents.

Over the most recent English winter, he smashed 299 Big Bash runs at a strike-rate of 154.92 for Jason Gillespie’s Adelaide Strikers, including a blistering century on New Year’s Eve against Sydney Sixers.

Having only played one T20 and one one-day international for Australia, he qualifies for an overseas visa because of an English grandfather, who lives near Leeds.

“No one really knew that I had the visa, but once that became clear Dizzy (Gillespie) was pretty keen to wrap it up quickly,” he added.

“He hadn’t seen me play a lot, so having a good Big Bash sealed the deal I guess.

“It was a pretty easy decision to come here given the strength of the county and the opportunity to play in all three forms. That was a major thing for me.

“At the Big Bash, I drifted the idea through Adil Rashid.

“Playing county cricket is something that I’ve wanted to do.”

Yorkshire will go into the match off the back of a Specsavers County Championship draw against Surrey at the Oval, which finished yesterday.

It was the champions’ sixth draw in nine matches this season, and they now sit fourth in Division One and 25 points behind leaders Middlesex with a game in hand.

Adam Lyth’s 202 off 291 balls represented his fourth career double century as the visitors, 407 all out in reply to 267, gained a lead of 140 with a minimum of 52 overs left in the day.

Spinners Adil Rashid and Azeem Rafiq had been introduced inside the first nine overs, with the latter striking with his first ball to get Rory Burns caught and bowled as the score slipped to 20-1 in the ninth.

But the hosts closed on 106-1 from 38 overs, with Andrew Hodd even bowling an over of leg-spin at the end as Andrew Gale took the wicketkeeping gloves.

Yorkshire were at least able to claim the maximum 13 points for a draw from a match which saw 142 overs lost to rain.

Lyth advanced from 116 overnight, hitting 17 fours and five sixes.

He shared 91 for the fourth wicket with Steve Patterson, who made 51, before Liam Plunkett later hit 37 off 20 balls after lunch to ensure five batting bonus points.
