OLIVER Leadham's devastating spell of four wickets in five overs saw York progress to the semi-finals of the Black Sheep Champions Trophy following a rain-affected clash at Methley.

The adverse weather brought a premature end to proceedings with the visitors well ahead on the scoreboard.

Earlier, York’s openers Joe Ashdown and skipper Duncan Snell made light of tricky batting conditions with a stand of 57 from the opening 15 overs, although the latter should have been out on 26, as Samuel Mofoking spilled a catch at mid-wicket.

Marcus Walmsley eventually struck in his opening over, having Ashdown caught at backward point by Sohail Raz for 26.

Snell was dropped a second time, albeit a more difficult chance, with the score on 73 and, along with Liam McKendry, he took advantage of some wayward bowling to advance the total onto 102.

Nine wickets, though, went on to fall in the space of 20 overs.

Edward Warmsley struck with consecutive deliveries, having McKendry (19) caught at deep midwicket by Barney Gibson, then trapping Snell (33) lbw.

Three boundaries were struck by Chris Booth, meanwhile, before he edged a ball from Marcus Walmsley to Grant Soames at slip on 15.

The Walmsley twins went on to finish with combined figures of 5-69 from 20 overs, while South African Mofoking returned for a second spell and his pace brought two wickets with Sohail Raz matching the efforts of his new-ball partner by also picking up a brace.

Wicket-keeper Luke Bullingham claimed a stumping and two catches including Richard Love (10), who was the only other batsman to reach double figures before a defiant Charlie Elliot (15) struck a six off Soames taking the score to 157, with what was the last scoring stroke of the innings, as the bowler gained revenge with an lbw decision off the next delivery.

During Methley's reply, Elliot missed out on an early wicket when Marcus Walmsley was dropped at slip in the opening over, but the opener was soon bowled by Oliver Leadham for three.

The teenager, making his first appearance of the season for the senior side, was almost unplayable and took two wickets in the space off three balls in his next over, accounting for former Yorkshire starlet Barney Gibson and the experienced Luke Bullingham both without scoring courtesy, off Booth and McKendry in the slip cordon, reducing the hosts to 8-3.

By that stage, light drizzle was falling and a further seven runs had been added when Grant Soames chipped a catch to Ashdown at mid-wicket giving Leadham (4-12) his fourth wicket.

Edward Walmsley (19) and Ashton Blakey (16) moved the score on to 49, before the match was abandoned.

York had reached 71 by the same stage, so progress to face Scholes or Yorkshire Academy next.
