ALGOMETER can stake a late claim for a place in the Investec Derby line-up with victory in today's EBF Stallions Cocked Hat Stakes at Goodwood.

David Simcock has previously indicated a trip to Epsom would not be uppermost in his mind for this son of Archipenko – but a win in this Listed heat might be enough to alter that view in what is one of the most open Classic years in recent memory.

Algometer showed some promise on his initial juvenile start at Goodwood last October, finishing fourth over nine furlongs despite running very green, before turning out later that month to win at Newbury ahead of being wrapped up for the winter.

He then reappeared in the Sandown Classic Trial last month, finishing a length and a half behind leading Derby candidate Midterm after trying to make his evident stamina count by kicking for home two furlongs out.

While Midterm proved a touch too sharp, Algometer is bred to get every yard of a mile and a half as a son of dual Group One winner Albanova, so a switch up in trip here is a definite plus.

Goodwood is not the most straightforward of tracks so if Algometer can negotiate this test on the Sussex Downs, Simcock must surely give the Derby a second glance before dismissing the opportunity, although Curragh for the Irish version has been mentioned. Jim Crowley rides today's nap selection.

ARISTOCRATIC, with Ryan Moore on board, can make it fourth-time lucky as she makes her handicap bow in the Goodwood Aero Club Fillies' Stakes.

She has finished third in each of her three starts, most recently when disappointing on her seasonal return at Chelmsford last month.

Yet she had shown some decent form as a juvenile last term and her pedigree suggests she should be improving as time goes on.

Sir Michael Stoute's entry in the Coronation Stakes may prove to be flying a little high but this event looks well within her grasp.

HESTINA ran out a comfortable winner at Beverley earlier this month and can follow up in the EBF Breeders' Series Fillies' Handicap.

She did not make her racecourse bow until finishing third at Sandown last month and, after showing plenty of promise that day, it was little surprise to see her win by five lengths on the Westwood.

Hestina did not beat too much that day but she could do little more than win and a starting mark of 80 gives Peter Chapple-Hyam something to work with.

TAKE COVER can make the most of a drop back to Listed company in the ApolloBet Cash Back If 2nd Achilles Stakes at Haydock.

Winner of a Goodwood Group Two back in 2014, David Griffiths' runner has been knocking around that level ever since without actually getting his head in front again.

There was much to like about his recent fifth in the Palace House Stakes and, as he was only beaten a length and a half in a blanket finish that day, it would be a surprise if he could not take a hand in the finish.

NEW LEASE OF LIFE unseated his rider at Hamilton last week but can gain compensation in the Free Horse Racing Bets At bookies.com Handicap at Carlisle, while FIRST BOMBARDMENT is the pick in Catterick's Racing UK Profits Returned To Racing Handicap.

INVOCATION is the choice in the Grafityp NV 70-Year Celebration Median Auction Maiden Stakes at Wolverhampton, while PAINT THE CLOUDS can shine in the Pertemps Network Stratford Foxhunters Champion Hunters' Chase at the Warwickshire circuit.
