RICHARD Hughes enjoyed plenty of success at Windsor as a jockey and Cape Discovery can ensure he does not lose his touch by landing the Equestrian Surfaces Ltd Handicap at the Thameside venue this evening.

The four-year-old boasts a nice pedigree as a son of Shamardal out a smart mare, but he had failed to set the world alight for John Murphy in Ireland, winning one of his three starts in claiming an average apprentice maiden at Dundalk last September.

Connections obviously decided not to persevere and he was sent to the autumn sales, where Hughes swooped to buy the gelding for a reasonable 35,000 guineas.

Tried over 10 furlongs at this track on his debut for the yard earlier this month, Cape Discovery made himself seem like a shrewd purchase as he shook off concerns about his readiness to race with a half-length verdict over Elysian Prince.

He looked as though he would make plenty of progress for that outing and while a subsequent 3lb rise means improvement will certainly be needed, Cape Discovery appears to have a bit up his sleeve.

Plenty of Hughes' Windsor wins came via the Hannon horses and Northern Thunder looks another likely type for that team in the Weatherbys Private Banking Novice Stakes.

He would not be the most expensive purchase in the Hannon yard having cost just £36,000 last month but he showed a modicum of ability in finishing third at Doncaster on ground that probably was not ideal.

Northern Thunder is related to one or two decent types and given the Hannon juveniles often come on a bit for a run, it would be dangerous to rule him out.

The days when Victoire De Lyphar was finishing second in the Ayr Gold Cup and rated over 100 seem a long way off now, but he should still have enough about him in the James Ward Selling Stakes at Leicester.

Now a nine-year-old, Victoire De Lyphar lines up off a mark of 72 as he tries to secure a first win since last May for Ruth Carr.

He has hung a bit on his last couple of starts but might just be able to put the pieces together and get his head back in front.

In contrast, Let There Be Light will be seeking a quickfire double in the jamesrossjewellers.com Handicap at Brighton after scoring at the seaside last week.

Dropped to 0-60 company, he triumphed by a cosy two lengths to gain a first win in seven outings.

He must shoulder a penalty for that success as he takes a moderate step up to 0-65 level, but now he has got his head in front, Let There Be Light must be one for the shortlist.

Grand Beauty looked certain to come on for her debut run at Chelmsford ahead of running in the racinguk.com/daypass Handicap at Redcar.

Robert Cowell's charge notched back-to-back victories towards the end of last term, prompting connections to raise her sights to Listed level on her final outing of 2015.

She raced prominently that day and felt the pace in the closing stages as she dropped away tamely but her Chelmsford third shows the fire still burns brightly.

Grand Beauty is entitled to make some strides for that run and could well get back on the winning trail.

Valseur Du Granva won easily at Towcester a week ago and can defy a 7lb penalty in the ApolloBet Cashback If You're 2nd Novices' Handicap Chase at Kempton.
