YORKSHIRE have endured a testing opening morning of their Specsavers County Championship campaign, losing three cheap wickets against Hampshire at Headingley.

The champions have reached lunch at 80-3 after 29 overs.

Alex Lees, Gary Ballance and Andrew Gale all fell after Hampshire captain James Vince took up the option to bowl first.

Lees was caught at third slip off left-arm seamer James Tomlinson before Ballance was caught behind off the visitors’ other left-armer Chris Wood as he tried to leave the ball.

And when Gale was strangled off Ryan McLaren for a duck, the champions were 41-3 in the 21st.

Adam Lyth has looked comfortable at the crease in tough conditions. He drove the first ball of the match for four against Fidel Edwards and has left well.

He will resume this afternoon on 39 alongside Jonny Bairstow, who is 16, having pulled Tomlinson for six.
