BRIGHTON may be popular with holiday makers at this time of year, but Tom Eaves' visit today is very much business.

It's more than 290 miles from the jockey's Norton home to the course, but he is hoping his trip proves worthwhile courtesy of two mounts on the card, both for former National Hunt rider Philip Hide.

Eaves partners BERGHOLT in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden Stakes and the two-year-old is not without a leading chance in a modest-looking race.

Fourth at Sandown on his debut, Bergholt has since occupied the same position at Lingfield, beaten by only a length and a half.

He seems to be going the right way and is fancied to make it third-time-lucky.

Eaves also rides AYR OF ELEGANCE in the Blueribandbet Always 7 Places On Golf Handicap.

Although comfortably held in fourth place on her handicap bow at Newmarket last time out, Ayr Of Elegance had previously finished a respectable runner-up on this course.

She has each-way claims as she aims to contribute towards Eaves' expenses for his rare 'away day' to Brighton from North Yorkshire.

William Haggas, who stole the show at York last week with five winners at the Ebor Festival, saddles TADPOLE in the Army Benevolent Fund 'The Soldiers Charity' Handicap.

Liam Jones' mount finished a satisfactory third on her comeback run at Lingfield earlier this month and should be fitter and sharper as a result. Tadpole comes from a family which Haggas has done well with in the past and it would be no surprise to see her make a bold bid in this mile and a half contest.

Newbury's twilight meeting - first race at 4.40pm - offers Silvestre de Sousa the chance to further turn the screw on his rivals in the jockeys' championship.

The title race does not end until the middle of October, but de Sousa already looks home and dried after establishing a huge lead over his remaining rivals, following the retirement of Richard Hughes, the reigning champion, and the injury to Ryan Moore, the former champion.

De Sousa has good prospects of winning the Betfred Handicap on GOLD PRINCE, who finished second to Alkawn at Salisbury a fortnight ago, beaten only by a length.

That was only Gold Prince's second start of the campaign and further improvement is entirely likely. This looks a good opportunity for him to return to winning ways for trainer Sylvester Kirk.

De Sousa also has a fair chance aboard ROSA'S CANTINA in the Betfred Supports Jack Berry House Fillies' Handicap.

Marco Botti's charge has not cut a lot of ice in her three tries in maiden company, but she was third to the promising Figment at Newmarket last time out. She will be much more at home now in handicap company, running off a modest opening mark of 63 which gives her a chance to shine in this seven-furlong event.

Luca Cumani, who figured on the Ebor Festival scoreboard last week, is responsible for the nap selection in DUFFEL in the Betfred Racing Handicap over six furlongs.

Having only his fourth start when she opened her account at Wolverhampton nearly three weeks ago, Duffel scored with something to spare that day. He has been raised 8lb as a result, but this lightly-raced sprinter surely has more to offer and is fancied to follow-up. Adam Kirby has the mount.

Also worthy of attention at Newbury are Cumani's fairly promising KNIGHT OF WANDS (5.10), who shaped well on his debut at Haydock, and Lady Cecil's SHADEN (6.10), successful in two of her three races to date.

Today's tips - Brighton: 2.15 Break Free, 2.45 Picansort, 3.15 Bergholt, 3.45 Tadpole, 4.15 Ayr Of Elegance, 4.45 Starlight Symphony, 5.15 Medicean Melody.

Newbury today: 4.40 In The Red, 5.10 Knight Of Wands, 5.40 Man Look, 6.10 Shaden, 6.40 Gold Prince, 7.10 Rosa's Cantina, 7.40 Duffel (NAP).
