CUSTOM CUT is set to get a run over a mile and a quarter as he looks to bag the £100,000 Sky Bet York Stakes at York Racecourse on Saturday.

Nawton trainer David O'Meara's six-year-old was a revelation last season, winning five Listed and Group races in a row, and returned this season with victory in the Group 2 bet365 Mile at Sandown Park in April.

He disappointed in the Group 1 Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes, also over a mile, at Newbury in May, finishing ninth, but returned to form when second to Arod under a 5lb penalty in the Group 3 Diomed Stakes at Epsom over an extended mile on June 5.

O'Meara said: "I would say Custom Cut is a likely runner in the Sky Bet York Stakes. It was a good run at Epsom under the penalty and we have had this race very much in mind for him since then.

"We are looking forward to seeing how he gets on over a mile and a quarter. He won the Strensall at York over a mile and a furlong and there is stamina in the pedigree, so we're hopeful."

The 100-30 favourite with the sponsor, Custom Cut will look to add to a top class winning roster, with Sheikhzayedroad (2014), Mukhadram (2013) and Twice Over (2011) all going on to score in Group 1 company.

His challengers are set to include the French horse Prince Gibraltar, who was placed twice in Group 1 races last year - the Prix du Jockey Club and the Grand Prix de Paris, and Ralph Beckett's Secret Gesture, second in the York contest 12 months ago.

Clever Cookie, representing Barton-le-Street's Peter Niven, could drop back in trip having won the Listed Stowe Family Law Grand Cup at York over a mile and six in May, while Norton trainer Brian Ellison may bring Ganton Stakes winner Top Notch Tonto back for another Knavesmire run.

Michael Shinners, racing PR manager at Sky Bet, said: "Saturday's card at York is the highlight of the Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival and we are delighted with the entries for the Sky Bet York Stakes and the Sky Bet Dash.

"Custom Cut is our 100-30 favourite for the Sky Bet York Stakes and it will be interesting to see how he copes with the step up to ten furlongs."

The Sky Bet York Stakes is the highlight of a seven-race card on Knavesmire, which forms part of the track's Music Showcase Weekend.
