MALTON trainer Richard Fahey runs eight horses in the same race at Newbury today – but may be scuppered in his scattergun assault by one of his neighbours!

Tim Easterby – who, like Fahey, is no stranger to success in the £250,000 Weatherbys Super Sprint – saddles EXCESSABLE, the mount of Duran Fentiman, and this talented juvenile is fancied to come out on top in a race which boasts a first prize of almost £123,000.

An impressive debut winner at Ripon in April, Excessable was not seen again until a couple of weeks ago at Beverley where he was beaten a neck by Lydia's Place, who has since won a nursery at York.

That recent outing should have benefited Excessable, who has always been held in high regard by Easterby.

The best of Fahey's team of runners may well be Lathom and Mr Lupton, while Richard Hannon – who saddles a six-strong squad in a bid to follow up his success 12 months ago with Tiggy Wiggy – may have his best chances with Receding Waves and Great Page.

Excessable, however, sets a good standard and is also well weighted with only 8st 3lb to carry. A bold bid is anticipated from the nap selection.

Danny Tudhope, who has been out of action since May with a complicated fracture of his thumb, returns to the fray at Newbury and will be aboard WATCHABLE for his North Yorkshire boss David O'Meara in the £60,000 Al Basti Equiworld Hackwood Stakes.

The five-year-old is still awaiting his first win of the season but he has run some good races in defeat, not least when a close-up fifth to Aeolus in the Group 3 Chipchase Stakes at Newcastle. The winner reopposes under a penalty today, which gives Watchable a chance to turn the tables.

CONSORT gets the nod in the JLT Stakes, which carries Listed status.

Frankie Dettori takes the mount on the colt, trained by Sir Michael Stoute, who finished a creditable third to Gleneagles, the dual-Classic winner, in the Group 1 St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot last month. This drop in class should enable Consort to resume winning ways.

At Ripon, prize money of £25,000 is up for grabs in the featured Ripon Bell-Ringer Handicap, which looks a tight race to solve.

Marginal preference is for TRIPLE DIP, the only three-year-old in the field and trained by Mark Johnston, whose string is in tremendous form.

Andrew Elliott's mount justified favouritism in good style at Doncaster last time. She was not winning out of turn after previously running several sound races in defeat. She can make the most of bottom weight.

The VW Van Centre Handicap is the target of Tom Tate's AHOY THERE, who won over this course and distance a couple of weeks ago.

There may be more to come from this four-year-old, who has had only two races this season.

PRIMOGENITURE may be the answer to the Skybet Supporting The Yorkshire Racing Summer Festival Handicap.

David O'Meara's gelding produced a solid effort to finish second at York last Saturday. This looks a good opportunity for him to go one better under David Nolan.

O'Meara and Nolan can double up with THE TEMPEST in the Happy 70th Birthday John Ward Celebratory Handicap. The three-year-old finished a good second at Doncaster last time and tends to race from the front rank, which are tactics well suited to the round course at this venue.
