CAYTON remained top of the pile in the Readers Scarborough Beckett League premier division after securing a tight 13-run home win over Ebberston.

The hosts won the toss and elected to bat first on a bright but breezy afternoon.

Jake McAleese and Michael Dennis started out in lively fashion, putting on 53 in just 14 overs before Dennis fell, caught at mid-wicket for 30 off 26 balls.

McAleese, who made 33 off 75 balls, followed his partner with score on 73 as the visitors started to peg them back, with some tight bowling by Eddie Swiers (2-32).

Reece Milner came back for a second spell and wickets tumbled at regular intervals as the swing bowler claimed a fine 5-31 from 10 overs as Cayton were bowled all out for 155.

Ebberston’s reply mirrored the home side's innings, as Jonny Mason and Adrian Turnbull registered a half-century stand to start things off. Steve McAleese was brought into the attack and removed both openers, Mason for 32 off 54 balls, brilliantly caught by Brett Crowe, and Turnbull for 20.

Ebberston were on 66-2 off 24 overs and the introduction of spin paring Nick Strangio and Rhys Crowe started to strangle the away side’s middle order and runs were hard to come by.

Skipper Ben Lealman made a nice 23 but, once he fell, Ebberston’s hopes faded and they finished 13 runs short on 142-9, Crowe taking 4-22 and Aussie Strangio 2-38.

Nawton Grange registered their first win of the season, with a resounding 139-run success over Filey.

Skipper Jonny Pickard led from the front as he plundered 90, finding good support from Adam Durrant.

After tea, the east coast side had no answer to the bowling of Michael Wearmouth, who claimed a fine 5-31, with James Greenlay chipping in with three cheap wickets.

Staxton secured their first win at Forge Valley since 2011 with a 48-run victory.

Valley asked Staxton to bat first, but found their batsmen contributing useful scores. Jodie Robson’s good early-season form continued as he top scored on 34, with Paul Witty (29) and Dave Morris (25) also contributing at the top of the order. James Armstrong’s unbeaten 32 and Chris Dove’s 27 not out saw the away side reach 208-6 after their 45 overs, securing full batting bonus points despite Shaun Topham’s 3-27.

Andy Toal’s impressive start to the season continued as he made 48, but only Mick Glew (38) offered support as Linden Gray spun his way to 5-47 and medium pacer Morris took 3-22 to complete a good return to his former club.

Heslerton made a disastrous start at home to Flixton II, losing both openers inside the first two overs with only one run on the board.

Tony Watson and Sam Triffitt had to dig in to salvage the position, their first 50 runs being added in the 20th over.

Triffitt was the next to go, clean bowled by Chris Mann for 36 after adding 95 for the third wicket.

Watson continued to a fine 76 and, on his departure, Richard Bentley and Andrew Slaughter plundered 68 runs for the seventh wicket before the latter fell for 20, Bentley remaining unbeaten at the end of 45 overs with 67 not out in a final total of 232-7.

In reply, the visitors lost wickets at regular intervals, Chris Mann (24) being their leading scorer with Adam Spaven taking 3-26 and Paul Kinhorn claiming the last four wickets at a cost of 14 runs to leave Heslerton registering their first victory of the season by 117 runs.

Brompton secured a huge 127-run win at home to Cloughton in division 'A'.

Ross Triffit top scored with a powerful 73 and James Bruce added 33 in their 225 all out.

Pete Milner’s excellent start to the season continued as the seamer took 5-27.

Mark Bruce then claimed four wickets as Cloughton’s reply never got underway, as they were all out for just 98, Gary Jordon making 27.

Seamer skipper Anthony Jenkinson made a superb century in his side’s comfortable win at Sherburn.

Jenkinson reached his unbeaten 101 by hitting a six of the final ball of the innings as the visitors made a useful 188-7, Phil Metcalfe contributing 39.

Sherburn’s Jack Pickard made a pleasing 31, but his efforts were not enough as Paul Greenhough registered a superb 6-22 as the hosts were shot all out for 112.

Wykeham won at Grindale by two wickets.

Richard Jackson’s 62 and Josh Dawson’s 41 saw Grindale to 154 all out. Wykeham skipper Garth Barnard was the pick of his attack with 5-30 and Dave Pearson also picked up three wickets.

Craig Bateman (40) and Pearson (29) were the main contributors as Wykeham sneaked home despite good bowling from Dawson (3-31) and Liam Cousins (3-36).

Cayton 2nds dismissed hosts Settrington for 89 with Simon Glave taking 5-25 and Joel Boyer 3-15. David Walker’s 47 not out, with good support from Brian Heywood, saw the visitors to maximum points.
