ASKHAM Bryan College becomes the newest venue on the Yorkshire Point-to-Point circuit tomorrow when a pristine course holds the Badsworth and Bramham Moor Hunt meeting.

For their first foray into the racing world, despite holding British Equestrian events, college chiefs have put together a left-handed course and invested in 20 new fences - including an open ditch that will be jumped twice.

Spectators will be able to view the action from the middle of the course and Liz Philip, the college executive principal, said: “We are delighted to be hosting the Badsworth and Bramham Moor point-to-point and are looking College racing ahead ‘Fantastic’ Point-to-Point first for Askham Bryan venue forward to a great day.

"We’ve had the wonderful news that the Racing Foundation has given its support which is a terrific endorsement and we’re extremely grateful.”

The action begins with the confined race and Christine Drury, secretary of the Yorkshire Point-to-Point Club, has a leading contender in Railway Dillon. Pevensey, a former inmate of Norton trainer John Quinn, who won eight times over Flat and jumps, will be a danger for Cherry Coward and her daughter Jacqueline Yorkshire’s champion jockey.

“He’s really well,” said Jacqueline. “He’ll like quick ground and is more than likely to run. I’ve walked the track and I’m gutted that I won’t be able to ride at the new course. It looks great and I’m sure it will be a good galloping track.”

Seven entries in the Restricted race sees Barton Jubilee in the frame for jockey Ollie Pimlott.

“He pulled up two out at Charm Park but he badly needed the run and we have waited for the better ground with him. We are hopeful of a good run,” said the rider.

My Old Piano retains all of his enthusiasm having won at the Derwent meeting last time out. He is going for his 27th Point-to-Point win in the Men’s Open.

In the Open Maiden, Mr Conductor is likely to line-up for jockey Emma Todd, while Coward believes As A Pheasant will take quickly to his new surroundings at Askham Bryan.

She said: “The track will suit him and he’s really well. I think he’s a nice horse and I’d really like him to qualify for the Aintree bumper.”

Beggar’s Velvet is a strong contender in the Ladies Open while Anthea Morshead, assistant clerk of the course at York Racecourse, will need rain if Oscar Time is to run.

“I’ve walked the track and loved it,” she said. “The team have done a fabulous job and the fences look lovely but we will need a bit of rain if we are going to run. He will definitely have come on for the Towcester race but we really needed to get a run into him which is why we went there.”

The first race is at 1pm and the postcode for satellite navigation is YO23 3FR. Racegoers should follow signs for Askham Bryan College from the A64 and then follow signs to the point-to-point. Admission is £10 per person.
