NORTH Yorkshire trainer George Moore sends Cowslip to Wetherby this afternoon in the hope that his resurgent mare can complete a hat-trick of wins.

One success in her first 21 outings, under both codes, was Cowslip’s tally before she came good at 25-1 at Carlisle earlier this month.

Anyone who thought that victory may have been something of a fluke have had to think again.

Cowslip has since scored on this course, drawing clear in the closing stages to win by seven lengths.

The six-year-old Middleham mare has a 7lb penalty to carry this afternoon, but with Joseph Palmowski, who won on her at Carlisle, back in the saddle to make full use of his conditional allowance, Cowslip is fancied to oblige once more in the Watch On 3 Devices racinguk.com Handicap Hurdle over two and three-quarter miles.

Jedd O’Keeffe one of Moore’s Middleham neighbours, also has a winning chance on the Wetherby card.

He saddles Vasco d’Ycy in the New Racing UK iPad App Handicap Chase.

Although he has still to get off the mark over fences in six starts, Vasco d’Ycy benefited from a step up in trip at Carlisle last time when chasing home Whiskey Creek. He has every chance of going one better off bottom weight with Joe Colliver claiming a valuable 3lb allowance.

Knight In Purple makes appeal in the wetherbyracing.co.uk Handicap Hurdle.

A winner at Doncaster on his penultimate outing, John Mackie’s gelding has since finished a creditable third to Special Wells on this course.

He is entitled to go well under Peter Carberry.

Dan Skelton introduced a useful looking bumper horse in Welsh Shadow at this venue last week and the Warwickshire trainer is represented by another newcomer in today’s National Hunt Flat Race.

Skelton saddles Wee Holio, and although it is impossible to make hard and fast statements about this unraced gelding’s credentials, he has a likeable pedigree and comes from a stable which does well in these type of events.

Although Wetherby hosts a six-race programme, the chances are that a sizeable amount of spectators will drift off before the concluding Aidan Coleman Every Friday racinguk.com Mares’ Hunters’ Chase, which has been reduced to a match.

Moreover, Executive Benefit is markedly superior on form to sole rival Crazy Jane and should run out an easy winner, granted a clear round.

At Newcastle, Looking Well is taken to get punters off to a good start in the opening Vertem Grand National Day Novices’ Hurdle.

Winner of a bumper at Perth on his debut last April and third in a similar event at Ayr in October after his summer break, Looking Well was then pulled-up on his hurdles bow at Kelso after being sent off a hot favourite.

The fact that he has not run since suggests there may have been a reason for that disappointing performance.

Looking Well remains a horse of some considerable potential.

He carries the colours made famous by Monet’s Garden, those of owner David Wesley Yates, and he is fancied to get his career back on track.

Montoya’s Son has been firmly on track all winter. Keith Dalgleish’s gelding has won his last four races, including two here.

He is nothing if not game and genuine and, off only a 3lb higher mark, and with smart conditional Craig Nichol effectively erasing that small increase with his riding allowance, Montoya’s Son will be a tough nut to crack in the Surgo Construction Handicap Chase.

The nap selection is awarded to Conjola in the AegisIT 4 On The Trot Conditional Jockeys’ Novices’ Handicap Hurdle.

The eight-year-old, a winner at Wetherby in May, has shaped well in her two latest outings and should relish this step up to three miles after finishing a staying-on fourth over a shorter distance at Kelso four weeks ago.

Honourable Gent (3.10), overdue a winning turn after finishing runner-up on his last two starts, and Mick Easterby’s Lightening Rod (4.15), a dual-winner at Wetherby this season but pulled-up at the Cheltenham Festival earlier this month after the rain arrived at the wrong time for him, are two others to bear in mind at Gosforth Park.

Wetherby today: 2.20 Prince Khurram, 2.50 Cowslip, 3.20 Vasco d’Ycy, 3.55 Knight In Purple, 4.30 Wee Holio, 5.05 Executive Benefit.

Newcastle today: 2.10 Looking Well, 2.40 Have You Had Yours, 3.10 Honourable Gent, 3.40 Montoya’s Son, 4.15 Lightening Rod, 4.50 What A Dream, 5.35 Conjola (NAP).

Today’s other meetings: Lingfield and Wolverhampton.
