OLD Malton St Mary’s unbeaten record in the York Minster Engineering League premier division is over - amid unpleasant scenes too.

Champions St Mary’s thrashed title rivals Tadcaster Magnets 6-0 at the Fitzwilliam last week but in a quick return match were humbled 3-1 after an error-ridden display blighted by two red cards, including one for a challenge which saw Taddy’s Rob McDermid taken to hospital.

The league leaders travelled in confident mood to Tadcaster but continuously shot themselves in the foot and paid for mistakes, missing a penalty as well as ending the game with only nine men.

Magnets went ahead within five minutes as a woeful clearance by keeper Ben Gill went straight to right winger Adam Field, who despatched the ball straight over the stranded custodian’s head.

This was Magnets’ only real chance of the first half but at the other end Old Malton failed to trouble the home keeper despite having more of the possession.

The second half began just as badly as Saints allowed a cross to come in too easily and former Kirkbymoorside striker McDermid was allowed to head home.

Richard Dunning let his frustration get the better of him and saw red. Down to 10 men, Old Malton produced their best football of the game as they finally started to look dangerous and made the home side panic, resulting in Tom Fenwick being felled in the area.

The striker, having scored from the spot last week, took responsibility again but this time a weak effort was easily saved.

Malton were made to pay instantly as a harmless free-kick was spilled by Gill and prodded home by Philip Smith, despite suspicions of offside.

Fenwick made amends for his miss as he stylishly flicked home a brilliant team goal which started on their own byline and passed through six players before the ball was slipped in to the forward after a combination move between Dean Nuttall and Steve Baxter.

With the home team rattled, Saints sensed blood but that lasted all of two minutes as full-back Paul Hodgson was shown a straight red card for a studs-up challenge on McDermid which left the striker writhing in agony.

The resulting delay lasted for at least 40 minutes while an ambulance retrieved the stricken striker and killed the Old Malton fightback.

Next week Old Malton will aim to get back on the winning track at home to mid-table Harrison Signs.

Second-placed Riccall United took advantage of Saints’ result by beating Osbaldwick 4-0 to close the gap at the top to three points.

Dunnington also closed in, recovering from last week’s shock defeat to Terrington Glory by humbling arch-rivals Huntington 5-1.

There was no joy either in division one for Ryedale’s two promotion-chasing sides.

Second-placed Malton & Norton and third-placed Brooklyn lost ground on leaders F1 Racing after defeats to Cliffe and Pocklington Town.

M&N crashed 4-1, in-form striker Chris Jackson getting all of Cliffe’s goals, including two penalties. Scott Preston got the sole reply.

Brooklyn were shocked 3-1 by visitors Pocklington Town - who sit second bottom of the standings. Karl Richardson netted for the home side.

Stamford Bridge were another side to pull off a shock, defeating division three leaders Civil Service 4-0 on their own patch.

On target were Paul Upton (2), Nathan Spreckley and Jamie Rank as the fourth-placed away side put the teams above them under pressure.

One of those sides, Kirkbymoorside, stayed third with games in hand after a 5-3 home win over Rufforth United.

Martin Charlton starred with a hat-trick while strike partner Lee Alexander and midfielder Aaron Rivis also netted as the Moorsiders kept their title charge on track, despite a red card for full-back Matthew Butler.

Lee Bartlett scored all three of Rufforth’s goals.

In division four, Settrington enjoyed a welcome 2-0 win over bottom club LNER Builders.

Edward Marwood and Louis Waltham got the goals while centre-back Andrew Selby was named man of the match.

Old Malton St Mary’s reserves were hammered 8-3 by Dunnington seconds in reserve ‘A’, striker Paul Crangle leading the way with a hat-trick while defenders John Heads, Kieron O’Brien and Jacob Hall all got on the scoresheet.

In reserve ‘B’, Malton & Norton seconds beat Fulford reserves 3-0, while promotion-chasing Stamford Bridge seconds were grateful to a starring performance by goalkeeper Gareth Owen as they drew 1-1 with Brooklyn reserves. Will Wood got Bridge’s goal.
