OLD Malton St Mary's underlined their York Minster Engineering League champion status as they dealt a hammer blow to the ambitions of premier division debutants Tadcaster Magnets.

The unbeaten Saints went into the game seven points clear in the table, with Magnets, defeated only once so far this term, among the chasing pack.

A tight game was expected on a heavy pitch at the Fitzwilliam, but instead the visitors were sent packing with a 6-0 hammering. The sides meet again for a quick return match this coming weekend.

St Mary's were given a big boost by neighbours Terrington Glory, too, with their fellow Ryedale side routing Dunnington, another of the title-chasing pack, 6-2 in the shock result of the day.

Saints were quick out of the blocks, with a Dean Nuttall corner hitting a post before the opener arrived inside three minutes as Steve Baxter's dangerous cross was diverted home by a defender at full stretch.

Despite the muddy pitch, Old Malton kept passing and always looked dangerous, especially with the visitors also trying to play attacking football and leaving themselves open.

The combination of Baxter and Tom Fenwick brought the second goal as Baxter broke through and crossed for Fenwick to beat the keeper with a near-post flick.

Saints keeper Ben Gill was called into action shortly afterwards but proved equal to the task.

Malton suffered a blow as the excellent Danny Fogg picked up an injury to be replaced by player-boss Darren Dunning.

The substitute's first action of note was to stab home amid a scramble only to be denied by the flag. His next was a fine goal. Daman Cox broke forward and timed his pass perfectly for Dunning to blast into the top corner.

Gill spilled a speculative effort early in the second half but was saved by Paul Hodgson's superb desperate tackle on the follow-up.

At the other end, Fenwick's shot was deflected narrowly wide and from the resulting corner Baxter flicked a near-post header into the net.

Malton continued to dominate the demoralised visitors and moved further ahead as a partially cleared corner was returned with interest by Nuttall's 20-yard first-time volley into the bottom corner.

Gill protected his clean sheet with a fine one-on-one save before Fenwick wrapped up victory from the spot after being fouled in the box.

At Dunnington, Johnny Brown gave Terrington a shock 1-0 lead - and that was by no means the end of the surprises at Common Road.

The long-serving Scott Sullivan hit the target for the hosts but parity was not in place for long as Alex Yates (2), Josh Ward and Ben Richardson all fired home to give Glory a 5-1 advantage.

Olly Newby gave the home side brief respite with a penalty to make it 5-2, but Ward capped an excellent day for Terrington with a neat finish.

The result lifted Glory up to 11th and further clear of the drop zone.

Malton & Norton had a good day, too, moving to within five points of division one leaders F1 Racing following a 5-2 victory at Total Sports United.

James McQuerry twice hit the target for the home side but Sports were outgunned by a Scott Preston hat-trick and a Simon Reeves brace.

M&N moved three ahead of neighbouring promotion rivals Brooklyn who were not in league action.

Kirkbymoorside and Stamford Bridge did their promotion chances in division three no harm.

The third-placed Moorsiders, who sit six points behind leaders Civil Service with six games in hand, were triumphant 4-1 at Jorvik Blades thanks to goals from Alex Strickland (2), Danny Butterworth and Martin Charlton. Joe Cox replied.

Bridge lie fourth after holding second-placed hosts South Milford to a 3-3 draw.

Steven Smith, Nathan Spreckley and Craig Hargreaves were on target for the visitors.

Defending reserve 'A' champions Dunnington reserves continue to stalk this season's leaders with menace - goals from Samson Wildwood, Danny Askin and Paul Crangle giving them a 3-1 win over Old Malton's second string.

Brooklyn seconds enjoyed a 2-0 win at their Pocklington Town counterparts in reserve 'B', while Stamford Bridge reserves edged Malton & Norton seconds 2-1 to go third.
