JASON GILLESPIE is hoping Yorkshire can cap their improvement in limited overs cricket by winning a trophy in 2015.

The Vikings played some excellent one-day and Twenty20 cricket during the most recent summer after a forgettable 2013, yet they still failed to qualify out of their NatWest T20 Blast group and did not make it beyond the quarter-finals of the Royal London one-day Cup.

They were well placed in both competitions, but slipped up at two crucial moments.

They posted 200-5 in their must win final T20 group match against Nottinghamshire at Headingley, with the visitors scoring 40 off the last 17 balls to win.

And coach Gillespie’s side also stumbled from 133-2 to 206 all out in pursuit of 238 in their one-day quarter-final against eventual champions Durham at the same venue.

There is no doubt that Yorkshire have the firepower in their squad to challenge for white ball honours to go with their LV= County Championship crown, it is just about learning how to get over the line when it counts most.

“We seek to play as well as we can in each game,” said Gillespie.

“Some people have questioned our selections, especially when we’ve been out of competitions, but we want to try and do as well as we can.

“We were really disappointed not to go further in 50-over cricket this year. We felt that we had the team to really challenge and get to Lord’s.

“To lose against Durham was bitterly disappointing. There were some good, honest chats in the dressing room after that. We know we need to be better.

“Individuals need to improve their games. In that game, we had three out of the top six who got ducks. Coming in on a slow wicket that’s taking a bit of turn, we need to find ways of overcoming those situations.

“We did that this year. It was just that game we didn’t do it, and it cost us.

“One thing which was really pleasing was that we did improve in 40/50-over cricket and T20 cricket. There’s something to work with, but we’d like to go further.”

The county fixtures for 2015 will be revealed at 10.30am tomorrow.

The make-up of both limited overs competitions will remain the same, with it already known that Yorkshire’s RL Cup group will consist of them, Surrey, Derbyshire, Worcestershire, Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Durham.
