FOCUSED Megan Carberry has won a top apprentice competition.

The young rider, who is attached to Brain Ellison's Norton stable, scooped the 2014 Go Racing In Yorkshire Apprentice Series following the final race at Doncaster last Saturday.

Carberry won a couple of races in the season-long event, on Town Moor in March with Memory Cloth and Ever Fortune the following month at Pontefract, on her way to amassing a winning total of 59 points.

The only other rider with a double was York's Jacob Butterfield, who won the last race on Mujazif.

Carberry now receives sponsorship from Go Racing In Yorkshire worth £1,500 in cash plus £500 in equipment from White Rose Saddlery of Malton.

She will also be able to take part in promotions with Go Racing in Yorkshire in 2015, helping to maintain her profile at a critical time in the careers of most young jockeys.

"It’s great to win this series, as it’s something I’ve focused on from the beginning of the season. I got off to a flying start and have managed to stay at the top of the table," Carberry said.

“I’d like to thank all of the owners and trainers who have supported and encouraged me, in particular Brian Ellison and I’m looking forward to helping promote racing in Yorkshire in 2015.”

John Sexton, Go Racing in Yorkshire chairman, said: "Many congratulations to Megan on winning the Go Racing In Yorkshire Future Stars series. It is terrific to see a young jockey making their way in the sport and there’s no doubt in my mind that Megan will be a star for years to come.

“The Future Stars series was introduced last year as a way of promoting young riding talent. The races have been carefully selected to challenge their skills over a variety of distances and on each of the individual, superb Flat racecourses that Yorkshire has to offer. Megan is a very worthy winner."
