MALTON & Norton came within spot kicks of causing a notable York FA Saturday Senior Cup upset.

M&N, in good form in division one of the York Minster Engineering League, held premier division high-riders Dunnington to a 1-1 draw in the second round of the Stoneplan Landscape Construction-sponsored competition.

However, it was the top-tier outfit who triumphed on penalties, winning 6-5 in the shoot-out.

Premier division form team Old Malton St Mary's were handed straightforward passage into the third round as opponents Hamilton Panthers, who sit bottom of division one still without a win, resigned from the competition.

Old Malton reserves, meanwhile, were no match for division two high-fliers Strensall in the York FA Saturday Junior Cup, sponsored by Construction Marine Ltd.

Strensall knocked in seven goals to St Mary’s sole consolation.

John Cooper led the way with a hat-trick, including a fortuitous one when Saints keeper Lewis Smith tried to clear the ball only for it to rebound off Cooper and go into the empty net. Joe Davison added two goals, and Jason Heslop and Josh Winn one apiece.

Stamford Bridge were 4-2 victors over LNER Builders.

Stamford’s first was an own goal and Jack Robertson, Nathan Spreckley and John Cavanagh completed the tally.
