YORK Union of Golf Clubs’ winter staple - the Cross Trophy - is now in full swing.

The first two rounds of the aggregate club competition played over 14 rounds, with two or three scores to count at each venue, were completed at Heworth GC and Fulford.

Cross Trophy 1 was won at Heworth by Kirkbymoorside GC duo Jonny Pattenden and Adam Magson.

They shot a fine 60 to edge out the Fulford GC pairing of former York City player Marc Thompson and Andy Robson on 61.

There was a much closer contest at Cross Trophy 2 at Fulford.

No fewer than 15 pairings finished within three shots of the winning score.

Topping the bill was the Flaxby Park GC axis of Stephen Simpson and Michael Bridge, whose 63 gave them victory on count-back from Malton & Norton GC duo Ian Oldfield and Brian Miller.

After the first two rounds, Fulford head the table on 326, with Kirkbymoorside close behind on 328. Pike Hills are third on 333, followed by Easingwold and York, each tied on 334.

The Cross Trophy will reach its conclusion at The Oaks GC next March.

•  DOT HOWELL of Easingwold GC has taken over the captaincy from Jean Richardson (Heworth GC) at the York & District Lady Past Captains’ Association annual meeting at York GC.
