BRIAN ELLISON went mob handed in a bid to win the Fine Equinity Stakes at York Racecourse and Edge Of Sanity sprang a 25-1 surprise to give the Norton trainer what he wanted.

The five-year-old, ridden handily by Paul Mulrennan, was one of five entries for the Spring Cottage Stables-based trainer and was having only his second run for Ellison after being bought for 48,000 guineas.

He finished half a length ahead of Quest For More to give Ellison a priceless Welcome To Yorkshire Ebor Festival winner.

“Four of the five were hold up horses,” said the trainer, who also saddled Totalize, Saptapadi, Streets Of Newyork and Knightly Escapade.

“I said to Paul to just sit handily with him. He ran at Ascot last time and we dropped him out last in a race with no pace. It just didn’t suit him.

“He is going to the Cesarewitch now. He is a lovely horse.”
