MALTON'S Royal Oak 'A' are the Malton & Norton League summer champions after another escape, this time against Union 'B' in the final.

In a tight and tactical match, John Render won the opening frame for Union but the momentum switched as Spencer Ward levelled after a marathon frame and Chris Seager put Oak 2-1 up.

Union then edged a tactical frame as Richard Flynn levelled and Dave Render followed in his brother’s footsteps to put Union needing just one of two pairs frames to take the title.

However, Oak found their fighting quality again as Seager and Jamie Barstow equalised before Mark Jeffels sunk the winning black in the decider when partnering Spencer Ward.

Oak's Dougie Pauley also won the men’s individual title, having previously won it in 2007. In a gripping final Pauley edged Mark Johnson 3-2.

Meanwhile, Kirsty Taylor won her two matches without dropping a frame - 2-0 and 3-0 - to become the ladies' individual champion for the fifth time since its introduction in 2006. Lynsey Lack was runner-up in her debut summer season.

This Monday (August 18) sees the league’s annual general meeting and winter season registration night. All teams wishing to register are asked to be at Bright Steels Social Club for 8pm.
