JASON GILLESPIE has called for consistency from his Yorkshire players both on and off the field as they bid to find their range in the Royal London one-day Cup, starting against Northamptonshire today.

Gillespie has seen his side win one and lose one of their opening two group ‘A’ fixtures.

They brushed aside Lancashire at Emirates Old Trafford last weekend before losing to Gloucestershire at Headingley last Tuesday.

There is still time for Yorkshire to get things right in this competition as they only have to finish in the top four of eight teams in their group and there are still six fixtures left to play.

But they must act quickly as three of those six come before the weekend and five of them in the next nine days.

After today’s floodlit clash at Wantage Road (2pm), they return to Headingley to host Worcestershire on Thursday and travel to Grace Road to face Leicestershire on Friday. Yorkshire then face Essex and Derbyshire at Scarborough next Monday and Wednesday.

“We played Lancashire and played a wonderful game of 50-over cricket and then played against Gloucestershire, which was about as ordinary a game as you can play,” said coach Gillespie.

“Hopefully we can have more good days than the one against Gloucester. If we do that, we’re confident that we can come away with wins.

“We’re confident, but at the same time we are very conscious of what we need to do to be successful and the processes involved.

“We need to be consistent with everything we do, both on and off the field. If we do that, including our preparation, the results will look after themselves.

“Against Gloucester, we just didn’t get our skills right, simple as that. We can come up with any sort of reason or excuse, but the fact is that we just didn’t get our skills right with bat, ball and in the field.

“When you don’t do that, you don’t come out on top in too many games of cricket.

“We just need to make sure that everything we do, there’s urgency and discipline about it.

“We must have very clear minds. Results will take care of themselves if we do that.”

Northants have also won one and lost one of their opening two matches, while Yorkshire are aiming to complete a hat-trick of wins at Wantage Road this summer having already won there in the County Championship and the T20 Blast.

“We’ll take each challenge as they come,” added Gillespie.

“Northants is our first one. We’re excited about going down there. While Northants haven’t had the best of seasons, we know there’s still plenty of quality in their side.”

The Australian has only made one change to his 12-man squad from last week’s Gloucester defeat, with wicketkeeper Andrew Hodd replacing England Lion Jonny Bairstow.

Sheriff Hutton Bridge’s Matthew Fisher returns to the county after England under-19s duty. He is expected to be 12th man.

Meanwhile, Alex Lees has been named on a five-man shortlist for the LV= Breakthrough Player of the Year award alongside Surrey pair Jason Roy and Zafar Ansari, Somerset’s Lewis Gregory and Kent’s Adam Riley.
