FOREST of Galtres Golf Club have indicated a desire to stage a Yorkshire PGA event in the future.

Sue Procter, secretary at the par-72 Wigginton course, said they would like to follow the likes of Sandburn Hall and Forest Park in having the region’s best professionals test themselves on the tough 6,534-yard Skelton Lane track.

With Forest of Galtres celebrating its 21st year, membership numbers are “creeping up” following the end of the recession and Procter said she was delighted with the way the course, particularly the fairways and greens, were maturing.

Asked about ambitions to stage a future PGA event, she said: “We did have a PGA event here before and it is something we probably would do again.

“It’s a question of teaming up with James (Wake, head professional) to do it. It does take quite a lot of planning, with the greenkeepers and everybody, to get everything ready but we would certainly try again.

“It’s a good advert and it is good to have your course tested by some of the best players.”

Procter added the Simon Gidman-designed course was “catching up” with more historic outfits in the city and declared: “The golf course has come on in leaps and bounds over the past few years. It looks completely different. All the trees have grown up, it has matured, the greens are good and, hopefully, we can spread the word.

“The greenkeepers are doing a really good job. I think it is a hidden gem. Membership numbers are creeping up but you have to keep thinking of new ideas.

“James is doing a great job on the teaching front and that is another way of drawing in new people. I am an optimist and I feel we are going in the right direction. We have got a good product and we have to push it to as many people.”
