STAXTON enjoyed an Andy Hire Scarborough Evening League trophy double last week as their ‘B’ team shocked Ebberston ‘B’ in the final of the McCain Cup at Flixton.

This competition is for teams in division ‘C’, which is currently topped by Ebberston, who went on to assure themselves of promotion with victory in the league.

But fourth-placed Staxton took the cup, young Kingsley Gray (10no) hitting two boundaries in the penultimate over to win the final by three wickets.

Staxton had won the toss and put Ebberston into bat, and it proved a good decision as wickets fell regularly early on, aided by excellent fielding.

Eddie Swiers’ innings of 42, including five fours and a six, turned things around, supported by youngster Scott Woodhead’s 20, as Ebberston ended on a competitive 112-8.

Gray took 2-17, Ryan Hargreaves 2-20 and Mark Dove 2-38.

In reply, Dan Blanchard hit a rapid 22 runs, with Jonathan Aldcoft making 22, Ryan Hargreaves 14 and captain Dove a hard-hitting 28, but wickets fell regularly with Ebberston also fielding well, while the introduction of Alex Machen (3-12) made it into a tight game, with Staxton needed 12 runs to win with two overs left.

Ebberston ‘B’ still had a successful week, though, as they sealed promotion after Adrian Turnbull hit 68 and Machen 43 in an 18-run win over fellow hopefuls Wykeham ‘C’, for whom M Gibson made 59.

Ravenscar can pip them to the title though, after they saw off Cloughton ‘B’ in their penultimate game.

Elsewhere, Sean Pinder crashed an unbeaten 101 as Forge Valley ‘B’ hammered Valley Bar Nomads.
