STAXTON put themselves in pole position in the race for the Scarborough Beckett League premier division title by convincingly winning their top-of-the-table clash with leaders Heslerton.

Hosts Staxton won the toss and elected to bat on a very dry wicket and moved smoothly to 60 before Michael Dawson removed both Nick Gibson and Jodie Robson (29).

With some excellent fielding, the match remained in the balance until Chris Dove took control with a fine unbeaten 65 to take the total to 204-7 at tea, Adam Spaven bowling his heart out in a full complement of 23 overs to finish with 4-77.

The visitors started their reply positively but the introduction of spin swung the advantage towards Staxton with only opener Alex Carrie (65) and Jake Keyworth (25) showing any mastery of the conditions.

The in-form Linden Gray (4-56) and Elliott Cooper (6-62) ended the leaders’ reign, having them all back in the pavilion for 143 to send Staxton 11 points clear at the summit.

Forge Valley stayed in the mix with a 45-run win over Cayton, all-rounder Dave Morris leading the was with 80 not out followed by a haul of 6-39. Brett Crowe took 4-82 for Cayton, with Michael Dennis top-scoring for the hosts with 45.

At the other end of the table, Flixton II beat Seamer by 11 runs to leapfrog their hosts and get off the bottom.

Pete Hill (37), Jack Walmsley (33no) and Geoff Hill (28) contributed to a Flixton total of 170-7.

Adam Robertshaw replied with 54 but Lee Elvidge (5-41) and Allan Parvin (3-30) swung the game the visitors’ way.

Adrian Turnbull cracked 110 as Ebberston rattled up 260-4 against Staithes, with Tom Brickman making 61 and Neil Eddon (30) and Eddie Craggs (26no) also contributing.

Ian Atkinson took 4-24 as Staithes were dismissed exactly half-way to their target.

Dave Gardner (62) top-scored for Kirkbymoorside as they bear Filey by 82 runs.

Martin Charlton (40) and Graham Jemmison (38no) also got in the act, defying R Baldly’s excellent 6-44.

Dan Jeminson took 5-37 and Jaques Budricks 3-23 in the reply.

Division ‘A’ leaders Scalby kept Cloughton in the relegation mire, beating them by six wickets.

Chris Malthouse made an unbeaten 56 to follow Phil Chambers’ 39 as Cloughton reached 150-6 but Paul Hesp (54) and Lee Kerr (36) led the successful reply, Mark Bennett (3-28) taking three of the four Scalby wickets to fall.

Nawton Grange gave themselves hope of catching second-placed Grindale by beating them by 45 runs.

Jonny Pickard starred with a superb 106 not out in Grange’s 209-5.

James Dawson (61) and Mark Purvis (50) did well in the reply.

Wykeham stayed third thanks to the bowling efforts of Dave Pearson (5-47) and Gareth Barnard (4-19).

The pair bowled Wold Newton out for 95 in reply to Wykeham’s 106 in which Charles Gray (5-39) and Mark Holtby (4-29) did similar damage.

Lee Jack (45), Kev Lickes (33), Phil Pickard (30no) took Sherburn to a five-wicket win over Brompton after the visitors had been dismissed for 158, of which Sam Cooper made 37 and Tom Pateman 39.

• The final of the Scarborough Hospital Cup will take place on Friday (August 1) at North Marine Road, starting at 6pm - with Staxton and Flixton going head to head.

Holders Flixton have beaten Pickering, Wykeham and Heslerton to reach the final and will look to batsmen Oliver Stephenson and Cooper and all-rounder Elvidge to perform well on the night. Staxton will look for more runs from Dove, Nick Gibson and Pinder, who also plays for Sheriff Hutton Bridge in the Hunters York & District Senior League. There will be a raffle at the gate.

Grindale beat Scalby in the final of the Scarborough Bowl played at Cayton on Monday .

Josh Dawson top-scored with 43 in Grindale 104-9, Paul Hesp taking 3-17 and Tom Gregory 3-19. In reply only Adam Waugh (26) could come to grips with Grindale’s excellent effort with the ball, Ben Jackson taking 4-21.

 

Ryedale put skids under Cayton bid

THE battle for runners-up spot behind Mulgrave in Scarborough Beckett League division ‘B’ is hotting up after second-placed Cayton II were shocked by bottom club Ryedale.

Ian Smith made 60 before Dan Hardey cracked 79 not out and Rob Featherstone 32 not out in a fine unbeaten sixth-wicket stand as Ryedale reached their target of 199.

Jes Riley (43), David Walker (35), Steve McAleese (35) and Simon Glave (25) had earlier taken Cayton to 198-7.

Fylingdales closed in on Cayton with a comprehensive 156-run win over Scarborough II.

Mario Spagnoulo made 88 and Barry Heyes 66 in Dales’ superb total of 268-7, Robert Grove (35) and Mark Estill (33) also contributing.

Hosts Scarborough III limped to 112-9 in reply, Brad Milburn making his way to 47 as Martin Cairns took 4-18 and Phil Stentiford 3-32.

Forge Valley II stayed in the hunt by seeing off lowly Staxton II by six wickets. M Perason made 71 for Staxton by Neil Arnott countered with a destructive 5-13 as they were all out for 142.

Thornton-le-Dale lost ground after they were bowled out for 113 by Bridlington in response to Brid’s 181 in which Andy Clay made 81 and Chris Headlam took 4-37.

Mulgrave stayed way out in front after S Newton (91no) and S Hinchcliffe (63) took them to a four-wicket win over Ganton after the hosts had made a seemingly competitive 213 all out, Will Bradley (45) Rob Bradley (27) and Rob Gretton (31) heading the run-getting.

Joe Bayes (69no) and Dinesh Swaminathan (25no) saw Ravenscar continue their march to promotion in division ‘C’ with a nine-wicket win at Heslerton II. Hezzo had earlier lost their first three wickets for only 188 runs before Daley Wharton threatened to change the complexion of the match with a swashbuckling 65, putting on 71 for the fourth wicket with Malcolm Spaven.

Heslerton were bowled out for 118 from 30.3 overs, Jish Rewcroft claiming 5-36, William Warwick 3-1 and Joe Bayes 2-8.

James Shepherdson claimed 3-22 as Fylingdales II were dismissed for 82, setting up a seven-wicket win for Wykeham II.
