YORKSHIRE Vikings failed to overhaul a modest target for the second time in three games after they were dismissed for a lowly 95 to suffer a 28-runs NatWest T20 Blast defeat to Durham Jets.

After suffering a 22-runs defeat on Saturday to Nottinghamshire Outlaws having failed to reach a victory target of 144, their batting failed again as they searched for the victory that would have propelled them to third in the North Group table.

Chasing Durham’s modest total of 123 for nine after they won the toss and decided to bat first, Yorkshire slumped to 95 all out in only 17.2 overs after losing nine wickets for 48 runs – narrowly beating Yorkshire’s lowest ever T20 total of 90-9, also against Durham at Chester-le-Street in 2009.

Yorkshire’s victory was all the harder to take after Adil Rashid dropped last man Chris Rushworth off his own bowling from the final ball of the 17th over with Durham on 94-9.

That drop allowed Rushworth to team up with Gareth Breese, who finished unbeaten on 30 off 19 balls, and add a crucial 29 runs off the final 20 overs of Durham’s innings that allowed them to secure a surprise victory.

Until that point, Yorkshire’s spinners had appeared to laid the foundations for victory with Rashid’s leg-spin and the off-spin of Azeem Rafiq, who claimed 6-34 runs in their eight overs.

Rafiq finished with 3-20, his best return since claiming career-best figures of 3-15 against Lancashire at Old Trafford in 2011, while Rashid grabbed 3-14 as Durham struggled to set a competitive total on a dry wicket.

Other than Breese, only two other Durham players reached double figures with Ryan Pringle hitting 17, while Phil Mustard attempted to hold the innings together with 40 off 43 balls.

Despite losing captain Andrew Gale in only the second over to a catch in the deep, the first of three wickets for Australian seamer John Hastings, Yorkshire appeared on course not only for a comfortable victory, but also to improve their run-rate.

But after racing to 47-1 in the sixth over, the loss of Alex Lees – bowled off his pad by Hastings – set off a stunning collapse that set the scene for Durham’s shock triumph.

Scott Borthwick, Durham’s leg-spinning all-rounder, made amends for his first-ball duck during their innings to turn the game, winning an lbw appeal against Aaron Finch as he attempted to sweep and then taking a brilliant diving catch to his left off the next ball to dismiss Adam Lyth.

Borthwick finished with 2-11 from four outstanding overs to continue the spinner’s dominance during the match and two more moments of confusion running between the wickets accelerated Yorkshire’s downfall.

Tim Bresnan was run out after Rashid called for a quick single after driving to cover and then last man Ryan Sidebottom was also run out going for a third run to end the game and leave Yorkshire needing to bounce back quickly against North Group leaders Worcestershire Rapids at New Road tomorrow night.
