Scarborough Beckett League round-up

Hezzo were bowled out for 157 in the 42nd over to lose by 27 runs and hand Seamer their first victory of the season.

Dave Graham (45), Jamie Haxby (32) and Adam Morris (24 not out) took the home team to 184-8 at tea, with only Kristian Wilkinson (4-55) having much success with the ball.

Replying, Michael Dawson (28) gave the visitors a promising start and Alex Carrie (30) showed signs of a return to form, but a collapse followed and it was only a 44-run eighth-wicket partnership between Tom Benthall and Tony Watson (27no) that took the final total up to 157.

Matty Morris (6-51) and Brandon Tyzzer (4-25) were the heroes with the ball for Seamer as they defied their position in the table.

Heslerton picked up only seven points and now sit seven off top spot after Staxton hammered Kirkbymoorside by 105 runs.

Nick Gibson (115) hit a century to take Staxton to 201-9, Dan Jeminson (6-53) impressing with the ball.

In reply, Graham Jemmison made 30 and Jaques Budricks 25, but Kirkby were all out for 96 as Elliott Cooper took 3-25 and Lindon Gray 3-5.

Tom Brough hit 122 not out as third-placed Forge Valley won by eight wickets at Filey, for whom Paul Bowes had made an unbeaten 91no.

Cayton stayed on the fringes of the front-runners thanks to an 82-run win over lowly Staithes.

Michael Dennis struck 82 as they totalled 173, Stuart Marsey taking 4-28. Tom Sixsmith’s 4-3 was a highlight of the second innings as Staithes were dismissed for 91, of which Simon Bowes contributed 49.

There was a shock at Flixton II as the hosts bowled Ebberston out for 51 to pick up their first win of term.

Mark Shackley took 5-20 and C Stephenson 3-28, before Stuart Stocks (33) took Flixton to an eight-wicket win.

In division ‘A’, bottom club Sherburn grabbed their second win of the season after reaching their target against Settrington with three wickets to spare. Jonty Rounthwaite hit 74 not out for Setty while Dan Simpson took 4-63 in the first innings total of 182-6.

Kev Metcalfe (53) and Dean Foxton (46) made vital contributions in the successful response.

Cloughton also got a second victory, beating Wykeham by 74 runs.

Paul Virr (67), Jon Malthouse (46) and Ricky Nock (32no) contributed to Cloughton’s 191-8 as Mark Vincent took 5-53. Mark Wells (3-40) and Pete Milner (4-35) then bowled Wykeham out for 117, Ethon Pashby making 38.

Nawton Grange scraped to a narrow win over Wold Newton with their last pair at the crease.

Adam Durrant (53no) was the hero in seeing Grange home against Oliver West (6-41) and M Southwell (3-31). The visitors had earlier been all out for 117 as Tim Sharples took 3-31.

At the top, leaders Grindale overcame a scare to beat visitors Sewerby 2nds.

Harry Hudson took 7-29 in 13.1 overs to have the hosts all out for 129, of which Liam Cousins made 58 and dad Ian 23. But his Sewerby side then fell for 81 as the Cousins shone again, with Liam taking 4-11 from 10 overs and Ian 4-20 off seven, including the wicket of the visitors top scorer, Alex Shipley, for a brisk 24.

Grindale stayed top, and Scalby second as they beat Bromtpon by 43 runs.

Lee Kerr made an unbeaten 120 as Scalby totalled 241-6 before the visitors were bowled out for 198, of which Karl Theobald made 51 and Tom Pateman 66. Paul Hesp took an important 3-11.

• The Scarborough Beckett League representative side lost by six wickets to the Central Huddersfield League at North Marine Road on Sunday.

Put in to bat, the Beckett League were 0-3 after three overs, but Heslerton’s Kristian Wilkinson (42) and Staxton’s Chris Dove (30) helped the total to a competitive 161 all out. Huddersfield, though, reached their target with one over to spare.

• The first semi-final in the Scarborough Hospital Cup will take place on Monday, July 7, between Flixton and Heslerton, at Ebberston with a 6.30pm start. Flixton, the cup holders, have beaten Pickering and Wykeham so far and will be favourites to lift the trophy again this year.
