Veterans match to add from WED?

JOSEPH HILLMAN was the top rod at the first Junior Open angling match at Laybourne Lakes near York.

The 15-year-old won the York & District Amalgamation of Anglers contest with a haul of 15lb on Brown's Pond at the Hessay complex.

He scaled a mixed bag, including roach, bream, golden tench and chub, caught on the pole.

Second with 9lb 6oz was Rowan Davies, who caught all his fish on the waggler, and third was Adam Cooper with 7lb 11oz.

Fourth place went Theo Bristow with 6lb 14oz, Liam Bradley was fifth with 4lb 14oz, Max Davidson's 3lb 11oz placed him sixth and Karim Kassels took seventh with 10.5oz.

Mike Longhurst, the amalgamation treasurer, said: "Everyone brought fish to the scales and the weather was ideal for once."

Young anglers will be out again when the York Junior Angling Championship takes place tonight on the River Ouse at New Walk Terrace.

There will be prizes for three age categories, under-12s, 12 to 16 years and under-18s.

The draw will be at 5pm, with fishing from 6pm to 9pm.

Meanwhile, the amalgamation stage their First Sunday Open match on the Ouse on Sunday.

The draw will take place at St Clement's Club in South Bank at 8.30am, with fishing from 10.30am to 3.30pm.
