GOLF ace Simon Dyson is looking to the Swedish Masters with renewed vigour after a superb finish in the BMW PGA Championship.

Dyson heads into the Nordea Masters tomorrow (Thursday) buoyed by a joint fifth place in the BMW event - the European Tour's flagship's tournament.

Such was the impact of his showing at Wentworth that he advanced no fewer than 40 oplaces in the world rankings to gatecrash the top 150. His four days in deepest Surrey took him from 187th to 147th position - his best world ranking for close more than six months.

His cheque too of 183,825 euros also almost doubled his tournament earnings so far this year hoisting him to 29th position of the leading 60 players who qualify for the European Tour's end of season Race To Dubai climax.

Said the North Yorkshire star: "It's nice to do it in such a great event as this.

"I finished third three years ago, and I still kick myself that I should have done better.

"But third then and a top-five (position) now - I'm really pleased."

On a storm-lashed opening day, Dyson carded a healthy three-under-par 69, though that good work was slightly blighted by a two-over-par 74 on day two when several players complained about the position of the flag placings at the Virginia Water course.

However, Dyson stormed back with a wondrous weekend show.

A second 69 on Saturday was followed by a Sunday display in which he powered from 11 shots adrift of the lead to his tie for fifth place when he fired a birdie-laden five-under-67, which included three consecutive birdies on the 12th, 13th and 14th holes.

That round was bettered only on the final day by eventual tournament winner, Rory McIlroy, and Scotland's Stephen Gallacher, who each hit 66.

Said the Malton & Norton Golf Club player: "I felt good before I went out and I hit a lot of fairways and greens to give myself a chance of a few birdies.

"It was really tricky conditions but I struck it solidly.

"I was really pleased with the weekend, because I'd put in a lot of work over the last couple of weeks. I just knuckled down nicely and it paid off."

The 36-year-old added that the final two rounds had "fired" his game after weeks where he had been playing solidly but without posting too many substantial below-par scores.

"Shooting eight over par for the weekend (at Wentworth) is a good situation."

Next up for Dyson is the Nordea Masters, which, for the first time in its history will be played at the PGA Sweish National complex in Malmo, starting tomorrow (Thursday).
