SURPRISE results abounded as the new Andy Hire Scarborough Evening League season got under way.

Champions Staxton ‘A’ and last year’s runners-up, Flixton ‘A’, both lost their opening games in division ‘A’ last Thursday, as Ryedale pair Heslerton and Ebberston ‘A’ enjoyed excellent evenings.

New Aussie Michael Dawson hit 70 and Malton & Norton rugby union player Sam Triffitt 26 not out as Heslerton rattled up 152-3 in their allotted overs against Staxton. Tom Benthall then took 3-24 as Staxton were held to 129-4 in reply, in which Rob Pinder hit 58 and Nick Gibson 34.

Reece Milner and Matty Turnbull were key men as Ebberston beat Flixton by seven wickets.

Milner took 4-13 as Flixton were restricted to 105-6, in which Harry Warmsley made 35 and Oliver Stephenson 34. Turnbull hit 38 in Ebberston’s successful reply.

Ian Cousins and Alastair Lamb both made 52 as Ganton enjoyed a 69-run win over Filey in division ‘B’. James Richardson took 3-7 as Filey limped to 71-7.

Craig Sanderson (51) and Dan Simpson (4-12) helped Sherburn beat Cayton ‘A’ by 39 runs.
