JASON GILLESPIE expects Yorkshire’s bowlers to bounce back from their disappointing display against Middlesex when they face champions Durham at Emirates Durham tomorrow.

Yorkshire were part of LV= County Championship history at Lord’s on Wednesday when the hosts chased down 472, the third highest successful run chase ever in that competition.

Chris Rogers took advantage of an off-colour performance, highlighted by figures of 1-134 from 22 overs for Jack Brooks, to score an unbeaten double century.

But the former Australian fast bowler is confident such a display from an attack regarded by many as the best in the country was just a one-off and that they will be ready to take on the champions in a televised clash.

Gillespie has named England duo Jonny Bairstow and Tim Bresnan in a 13-man squad.

York’s Bairstow has missed the season’s first three matches having broken a finger in pre-season, while Bresnan has done likewise having been ordered to rest following a busy winter with England.

Bairstow, who has showed good form in Yorkshire Academy and second XI cricket through the week, could play as a specialist batsman, with Andrew Hodd retaining the gloves. York’s Jack Leaning is in the squad in place of Rich Pyrah.

Gillespie said: “We just didn’t get our skills right. We’ll get them right next time.

“The bowlers put their hands up and said ‘we didn’t get it right’. There was no ranting, no raving, just an honest acknowledgement that we didn’t get it right.

“Cricket is a simple game. If you bowl a good line and length, you’ll get rewarded in time. If you don’t, you’ll get belted all over the park. That’s what happened to us in the second innings.”

Yorkshire’s defeat ended a 21-match unbeaten streak away from home in the Championship.

That run dates back to a ten-wicket reverse against Somerset at Taunton at the end of May 2011.

Yorkshire kick-started their encouraging Championship campaign last year with a four-wicket win at Durham when they chased down 336 for the loss of six wickets, a pursuit anchored by Joe Root’s brilliant 182.

“We’re very excited to be facing Durham. They’re last year’s champions, and we’re very excited about playing them,” added Gillespie, who described that win as “one of the highlights of last year”.

“They’ve recruited Kumar Sangakkara for this match. As we all know, he is a Sri Lankan legend. That will give them a lift. Even so, for our guys it will be fantastic to come up against a player of his quality. Our lads are already talking about that opportunity.

“You want to test yourself against the best players in the world. Our lads are jumping out of their skin looking forward to embracing that challenge.

“There are no easy games in division one. We beat Middlesex twice last year, we know how good a side they are, and they showed that in the game we’ve just finished.

“It was a very good game of cricket, and I like to think that both sides entertained the people who came to Lord’s to watch. Unfortunately, we finished on the wrong side of it.”
