WOMBLETON Wanderers were unable to cap a great debut season with success in the Scarborough & District FA Junior Cup final.

Wanderers, the new champions of the newitts.com Beckett League second division, lost 6-3 to holders Lingdale United, of the Eskdale League, in the final at Whitby Town’s Turnbull Ground in front of a crowd of 151.

Lingdale took the lead after only six minutes through Wayne Skelton’s unstoppable 25-yard left-foot shot. Four minutes later Andy Smith fired just wide.

Wombleton’s first effort arrived after 15 minutes when Luke Tateson  found brother Josh but the Lingdale keeper Chris Moore came out of his goal to save well.

Lingdale doubled their lead on 17 minutes when Luke Johnson cut inside after a left-wing run and fired in a low shot from 15 yards.

Wombleton came back into the game five minutes later with a superb goal by Luke McLaren, who had driven up from Bristol to play.

It came after good build-up play by Jake Dennison and Luke Tateson and it gave Wombleton heart - but they allowed Lingdale to restore their two-goal advantage within 10 minutes, Luke Johnson the scorer.

Again Wombleton hit back quickly as Dennison scored after excellent work by the impressive Tom Ellis.

Lingdale then had a brilliant 10-minute spell with Skelton, Johnson, Joe Ferguson, and Skelton again all going close, but without adding to the lead.

In among all this, Wombleton keeper Sam Taylor suffered a bad chest injury but in the stoppage time that was added on for the injury, man-of-the-match Dennison scored an excellent equaliser after good work by Luke Tateson.

Five minutes into the second half, Lingdale regained the lead through Mike Willans and Andy Smith added a fifth on the hour mark. The sixth came after 69 minutes courtesy of Ferguson after brilliant work by Skelton.

Wombleton’s Sam Appleton went into goal after 73 minutes to replace the injured Taylor to the delight of Lingdale who were fearing his midfield skills and long-range efforts.
