RYEDALE Judo Club Bryony Elliott had a bronze medal in sight but had to settle for fifth place in the Northern Ireland Open held in Belfast.

Elliott, a coach and junior liaison officer at the club, was competing in the under-63 kilogrammes senior women's competition at the international event.

She won her way through three rounds to get to the fight-off for bronze but in that bout she was caught with a superb throw by her opponent, Kerry Thompson of Pro Judo.

The result saw Elliott, a first Dan, retain her ranking position of 23 for this summer's Commonwealth Games but she needs more ranking points to be in serious contention for a place in Glasgow.

She will be back to serious training this week, after a recent shoulder injury which has limited her mobility for the past two months.

Her next tournament is the London Open on April 13, where she hopes to improve her English and British rankings and acquire more points towards her second Dan grade.
