ST MARTIN’S Ampleforth's under-13s team have won their second rugby sevens tournament of the season - while local rivals Terrington Hall have likewise enjoyed sevens success.

The St Martin's team triumphed at Mowden Hall near Newcastle, winning all their group matches and comfortably progressing through the quarter-final and semi-final.

They played Terrington Hall in the final, winning by 20 points in an impressive display of open rugby.

This was St Martin’s third tournament final, and second victory, their loss coming only in extra time at the Durham School Sevens. National challenges follow in the IAPS Sevens, at Oundle School, and the National School Boy Sevens, at Rosslyn Park.

Terrington Hall, meanwhile, have enjoyed a sporting double - with their U11s rugby union team triumphing Westville House’s U11s sevens tournament and their U13 girls winning Durham School’s U13 hockey competition.

At Westville, Terrington lost their first game 14-7 to Highfield Prep but earned a place in the final against the same school after beating Belmont Grosvenor 14-7, Brackenfield 42-0 and Richmond House 31-0.

In the final, an early try by George Welch put Terrington 7-0 ahead and a superb last-gasp cover tackle by Adam Reid prevented Highfield from equalising in the dying seconds.

Deputy headmaster Steve Mulryne said: "Somehow we managed to cling onto our 7-0 lead. I was incredibly proud of how the team pulled together."

At Durham, the U13 hockey team swept through the group stages with wins against Red House (1-0), Cundall (1-0) and Durham 'B' (6-0), going through to the final against St Martin’s after a 1-0 semi-final win against Durham 'A'.

The final ended in a 0-0 deadlock and went to penalty flicks. Amelia Blackburn, Anna Barker and Tara Jones slotted home for Terrington, and a tremendous save by Lily Browne on St Martin’s second strike gave them victory.

Head of girls' games Natalie Glen said: "The standard of play at Durham is always high and this year was no different, but a tremendous team effort and individual brilliance from Tara Jones and Amelia Blackburn won the day."
