KIRKBYMOORSIDE reserves capped their title-winning season in the newitts.com Beckett League with a 1-0 win over last year’s champions Sinnington.

The Sinners gave a much-improved team performance to prevent the Moorsiders racking up a century of goals in the league campaign – they ended on 97 - but again their lack of a consistent goalscorer proved their downfall.

The winning goal was a penalty conceded by Gary Mitchell and converted – fittingly - by Kirkby player-boss Andrew Ferguson, who has done a fantastic job in his first year in management.

His side have now finished their league campaign with 17 victories from their 18 league matches. Sinnington are in the race for runners-up spot.

Arran Rivis, playing up front for the Moorsiders, and Sinners pair Gary Mitchell and Luke Clemmit all shone.

Union Rovers moved up into second place despite being pegged back to a 2-2 home draw with lowly Gillamoor.

Union took a two-goal first-half lead through Ryan Cooper and Dan Simpson, but Gillamoor came out a far different side in the second half.

Ryan Diuga scored to get his side back into the game midway through the half and, with 10 minutes remaining, substitute Sean Wilson scored a fine equaliser.

Gills also had a couple of late chances to win it.

The men off the match were Rovers right-back Nicky Todd and Gillamoor skipper Andrew Claughton.

Thornton-le-Dale remain fourth after a 3-0 win at Rosedale.

The visitors took the lead after five minutes when Craig Barnes, having linked up well with Simon King, crossed for David Elliot to score.

On the half-hour mark, Taryn Midgley was brought down in the box but Elliot shot wide from the spot.

Elliot turned provider on 58 minutes when setting up Tim Hunt to score Thornton’s side’s second goal and in the last minute Elliot scored his second.

Rosedale battled well but could not find the net and were grateful to a man-of-the-match display by goalkeeper Shaun Dowson for preventing more goals against.

Craig Barnes stood out for Thornton, with Hunt also impressive.

Fifth-placed Bagby & Balk boosted their chance of a top-four finish by coming from behind to edge sixth-placed Ryedale Sports Club reserves 3-2.

Ryedale took a two-goal first-half lead through John Sherwood after five minutes and Tim Whincup after 10.

The second half was a far different story. Within two minutes of the restart, teenage right-back Jamie Parkinson crossed the ball for Bagby and saw the ball drop into the Ryedale net.

Ten minutes later, teenage midfielder Dom Rayner, Bagby’s star man, equalised, and midway through the half his side were given a penalty after Darren Bell broke clear from the halfway, beat four players and was brought down in the box.

Bell got up to convert the spot-kick past Ryedale’s man-of-the-match goalkeeper Steve Walker.

This Saturday, Bagby host Thornton-le-Dale, both teams needing victory to maintain ambitions of getting into the top four and the Victory Cup semi-finals.

l Midweek games in the Beckett League will start next Wednesday, April 2, with 6pm kicks. In division one, Sinnington will entertain Ryedale SC reserves, while in division two Kirkdale United host Wombleton Wanderers in a top-of-the-table clash, Pickering Knights entertain Easingwold Town 3rds, and Thornton-le-Dale Res face Heslerton reserves.
